Music is the "bread" of life. What would life be without it? I believe everyone should be a participant. Everyone should play an instrument and that anyone can do it. My favorite is the piano and organ although I have played clarinet and sax in bands. Why the piano? It is definitely the most complete form of expression. Name any other instrument in an orchestra and as an individual creation of rhythm or melody it is incomplete without one or more other instruments to play with it. While the piano is usually a part of an orchestra it can be played and be complete without any other instrument participating. Let me offer you a challenge: wake up that sleeping piano in your living room! The first old movies may have been silent but no respectable piano should be. Let me give you the benefit of 20+ years of teaching and performing experience. At the end of 10 easy lessons I guarantee you will be playing songs with both hands. Playing so well you will beg for more. So dust off that piano! Let's make music.
I am an experienced piano and organ teacher with many years of music teaching and performance (solo and in groups). I have taught in student's homes and in commercial music studios. I have taught students from the very youngest (4 yrs) to the oldest (82 yrs). I have conducted piano classes in my home school district for the adult evening school for beginners and intermediate piano students. I am also a performer. I have played piano in 4 and 5 piece combos in night clubs and restaurants. At one time I had my own combo, the "Jerry Sardella Quartet" ! More recently I played solo piano and solo organ in clubs and at social functions in the Philadelphia area.
My approach to teaching is, basically, that playing piano should be enjoyable and fun so I tailor the lessons to the type of music in which the student has interest. I do, however, have a basic structure that includes reading music, finger dexterity and songs at the student's playing level. If there is an interest in contemporary music I have an "easy to learn" approach to chords and accompaniments. I also give lessons in music composition. I believe that music should be a part of everyone's life and that it is easy, fun and anyone can do it.
I describe my teaching style as casual in that I tend to encourage creativity along with traditional classical music teaching. Also, I avoid repetitive drill and favor teaching derivation such as intervals as the basis of all scales and chords instead of memorizing scales. I integrate chords and chard variations as appropriate with the execution of a song. To emphasize the fun part of the lesson, which is song, the student participates in the song selections as well as the type of music which is taught.
