Overview:
Hi. My name is Jesse and I am a drummer. I graduated from Bennington college in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts with a concentration in music, after which I moved to New York City to study jazz drums with some of the most gifted and creative musicians in the world. I’ve travelled the world playing music professionally in a variety of styles, in over 70 different countries across every (habitable) continent! When I’m not performing, composing, or recording music, I like to study history, science and literature.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching music for more than 10 years. While living in New York City I taught group ensemble classes for students ages 10-16 which played everything from jazz standards to pop, rock, hip-hop and blues. I’ve taught private lessons in drums, guitar and piano for Third Street Music Settlement, the country’s oldest community music school. My students have went on to participate in Berklee School of Music and Jazz at Lincoln Center educational programs. I have taught in after school lesson programs as well as in the public school system.
METHODS USED
I try to cater my lessons to the interest of my students. If a pupil’s passion for music can be harnessed, then developing musical skills can be a simple process. I have a wide variety of material I teach from, including Ted Reed’s syncopation, George Lawrence Stone’s Stick Control for the Snare Drummer and basic piano literature. I also use music selected by the student to create custom lessons. I teach lessons on drum set (all levels), piano (beginner to intermediate), and guitar (beginner).
LESSON STYLE
I have a dynamic and flexible teaching style and personality. It’s important for me to assess what kind of learner and individual each of my students is, and that informs how I form my lessons. I prefer to set goals for my students based on what they would like to achieve, and what inspires them to want to continue their musical studies. My broad base of knowledge can offer a complete understanding of the art and science of music. My own goal is to demonstrate students that disciplined practice is a fun, rewarding and life-changing activity.
