Bachelor of Music, Hunter College, Jazz Performance
Awards:
2016 - Hunter College Presidential Music Merit Scholarship
Overview:
My musical background originally consisted of classic rock and blues music. I then wanted to expand my pallet of music while attending Hunter College for my Bachelors of Music with a concentration in Jazz Performance, therefore, I began studying Jazz, Funk, and Latin music. This consisted of joining the college Big Band and many small Jazz and Contemporary music groups gaining much experience. I've had many opportunities to learn from some of the greatest musicians in the world and I am excited to share that knowledge with my students.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to high school. I used teach friends and local kids in the neighborhood. I recently moved to Brooklyn and now have a home studio here where I can give comfortable private lessons on a full acoustic drum set. Encouraging regular practice and a consistent teaching schedule is an ideal point that I like to emphasize for younger students, as it helps gain progress and passion for the drums. I've found that connecting our practice exercises and techniques directly to music helps students understand better and find it more interesting.
METHODS USED
My goal and method of teaching is to give the students the tools they need to play whichever kind of music they are currently interested in. I do not like to teach genres or songs specifically. I like to give the student the correct tools and exercises to make them a great musician and drummer in any style of music they would like to play. I use methods and exercises that work on coordination, fluidity, control, speed, and musicality. I also teach and inspire how to keep a positive mind set and how not to get discouraged.
LESSON STYLE
I love to have fun teaching and keep things positive and light! Music is supposed to be fun, and it becomes even more fun when you start progressing at the drums, which you will! :) Having patience and keeping focus is key to this success and is the most rewarding. Therefore, I encourage realistic goals for my students so they can keep becoming more and more motivated knowing the progress that they have made. I also like to keep a journal or log book for the students so we can track their progress.
