Overview:

My life has always been about music, not only in performance, but in teaching, and collaboration. I believe everyone has music in them, no matter what age. One afternoon when I was watching Mr. Rogers Neighborhood I saw in the episode a classical pianist. I was so enamored by the sound of the piano and the classical piece that was being performed I immediately ran to my room, turned my little keyboard on and did my very best to imitate what I saw and heard. Displeased with how my playing sounded I started crying. My mother came to me and asked me what was wrong. I told her that I wanted to play piano like Mr. Rogers' friend on the show. I was four years old and from that day forward my musical journey began. I continued piano lessons and often got in trouble with my teachers, I played by ear, and while my piano playing was superb, my sight reading lacked immensely. I took guitar lessons at age thirteen to expand my musical experience, and while I loved playing classical piano I wanted to be in bands and play rock n' roll. Guitar came very naturally to me and in a matter of months I was writing my own songs and fronting bands. From middle-school to high-school I continued to study guitar and classical piano and began my own teaching business and teaching music is where I finally began to understand sight reading and theory. When I graduated I went to Goshen College to study Piano pedagogy, I quickly switched my major to teaching and shortly into the semester I was offered a job as a head music director for a youth program at a local church in Mishawaka, IN where I worked on staff for eight years, training hundreds of young people to play music and sing, many of which are now professional musicians. While teaching and directing in Northwest Indiana I began to write and compose music for my own projects which led me to traveling overseas and touring across America, playing thousands of venues, sharing the stage with well known artists all while sharing my music. I've also recorded dozens of records from coast to coast. I lived in Nashville, TN for a few years composing, recording and performing, and recently moved to Atlanta over the last two years. Since living in Atlanta I have been part of a musical collective called the Cabbagetown Chronicles and co-founded a production company Wigglesworth Productions where I compose and produce music for short films.

EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching since I was thirteen years old, as I mentioned in my bio, teaching has been a huge part of my life. I have always loved teaching because it brings to light new ideas & new understandings. In the 21 years that I've taught music I've had the honor of working with thousands of students of all ages with piano, guitar, drums, voice, theory, and composition, genres spanning from classical, to jazz, blues, folk, rock, and pop! Music isn't a job to me, it's like breathing, and water, and I've been so proud of my students and the accomplishments they've made and seeing their dreams come true!

METHODS USED

I love music so much that I want to share with anyone who wants to learn from me what I have learned and experienced with music. While I am firm believer in teaching theory and technique, I also believe that music needs to be an experience that captivates my students, no matter the age. I always ask my students what their goals are and depending on the goal this will determine the approach. If you are young(or old) and want to play classical music, then we start with the basics. One of my favorite books to teach from is Alfred's Basics. If you are wanting to be a songwriter and play guitar, I teach basic chords and theory, and songwriting, and we build from there. Checking in is always important and I want to make sure my students are challenged and encouraged, but most of all having fun!

LESSON STYLE

My number one goal is to help my students accomplish their musical dreams, whether that be a classical pianist, a pop singer, the front person for a rock band, write songs or compose music for film, or just sing their favorite song of all time, whatever it takes, I will make sure that we get to the musical destination. It's important that each student progresses at their own pace. I always ask my students for one long term goal and one short term goal so that we can cast vision for where we are headed, map out the challenges along the way, but also celebrate the goals that we accomplish especially in the short term. Checking in is essential and I am always happy to adjust accordingly so we can feel good about the musical direction we are headed in together.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
