Overview:
I have always loved teaching music. I think that it is a very important aspect of being a musician. I feel the need to pass on everything that I have learned. I started studying classical music and shortly after beginning, started to branch out into other styles. Over the years, I have studied, country, Irish, and Cajun fiddling, Jazz, Rock, Improv, and kept up with my classical studies. I love being able to perform with different types of musicians and share my love of all music while continuing to learn more and more. I have played in several symphonies, worked in different theaters, played with bands, done studio work, and taught violin, fiddle, viola, and piano for years.
EXPERIENCE
I took on my first students when i was still in high school and have been teaching ever since. I have had several studios throughout the years in different places that I have lived. I enjoy teaching different styles of music and encouraging my students to listen to and try playing new things. I like to keep things fun and entertaining. I am always happy to write arrangements of songs my students want to learn at whatever level they are comfortable playing. I like to find opportunities for my students to share their music throughout the year, whether it be in recitals, public performances, masterclasses, or just performing for each other once every few months. I believe it's very helpful for them to perform as often as possible.
METHODS USED
I like to use several methods in my lessons. I use a lesson book, Essential Elements for Strings for violin and viola students and Alfred books for piano students. In addition to these, I supplement with song books, concertos, etudes, scales, and songs the students want to learn to play. I also teach ear training where I'll play something and then have the students play it back to me. I think it's essential to not only learn to read music, but to play by ear, AND improvise! Music is such a wonderful platform for expression and I never want my students to feel like they're being held back because they don't have sheet music for something!
LESSON STYLE
One of my favorite parts of teaching is watching my students light up when they accomplish their goals. Nothing quite compares to that. I like to challenge them with pieces of music that may be a little beyond their reach, but it gives them something to work towards. I also like to encourage them to pick out a song they want to learn in addition to what we're already working on. I understand how tiresome it can be to only work on etudes and exercises, so as long as they're putting in the work on these, I like to add something a little more fun to keep them going. Like a parent sneakily hiding vegetables in their kid's food, I like to focus on technique in pieces of music that are designed to be fun. They feel like they're learning the hottest new song on the radio, but they're still learning intonation, rhythm, bowing techniques, and more!
