BM, Northwestern State University, French horn and voice performance
I love teaching! I am creative, enthusiastic, loving and fun. I have a bachelor of music from Northwestern State University, where I graduated summa cum laude in 2004. I went on to start my master’s degree work at the University of Texas in Austin. From there I built a highly successful studio of 60 students, many of whom went to state competitions, won awards and even went on to obtain their degrees in music. I started teaching as an orchestra director in 2008 and continued teaching in public schools until 2016. I have performed all over the United States in regional orchestras and a professional choir.
I had a successful private studio from 2003 until 2008. My students ranged in ages from beginners to seniors in high school. Then I began teaching formally in schools in 2008 until 2017 where I taught middle and high school orchestra and choir and also elementary music. Many of my students competed in various competitions from region and state orchestra or choir and solo and ensemble contests and won medals up to the state level. Many even went on to college to begin their own study to become teachers.
For orchestra students I usually use Essential Elements to begin for the first two to three years. I also use the Suzuki method and books for studying above what they are learning in the classroom. For voice and orchestra students I also find out what they are most interested in and what styles they want to learn and incorporate that into my lessons as well. That helps keep students in engaged in their learning. I keep my lessons on task but also fun. All of my students know that I care about them even beyond their knowledge of music and into their everyday lives, from other extracurricular activities to hobbies.
I work closely with both student and parent to create obtainable goals that students can focus on so they can see their progression throughout each lesson. I find out what inspires them and tailor each lesson to their wants and needs. Reaching their goals is so important because it keeps them motivated and engaged in their lesson and also makes them develop pride in their achievements once they reach their goals. It is important to focus on what they are learning in the classroom so they stay on top of their lessons there but it’s important to also have other goals and find other things that are important to them to learn so they are excited to come to their lesson every week.
