I myself am a music student on my way to study at University of Alabama for a Bachelor's in Music Education. I have been privately instructing students of all ages for a full three years, starting when I was fifteen. I never turn down an opportunity to perform, and have played in multiple orchestras, symphonic bands, jazz bands, and marching bands. I spent two of my years in a marching band as the drum major, and continue as the principle clarinet player in both my home orchestra and symphonic band. I teach from my home but prefer to go to the student's home, because I live with five people and own a lot of pets.
I have been involved in music my entire life, starting in a percussion group and choir in elementary school. I started on the clarinet at the beginning of middle school. I taught myself how to play the clarinet amongst the other instruments I play with the help and guidance of college professors, band directors, and tricks I noticed along the way. I have been selected and performed in multiple honor bands across my time in middle and high school, including Troy University's honor band and All State. I have taught students of all ages and have even done well teaching a wonderful three-year-old boy on the cello. I love planning recitals for my students, pushing many of them out of their comfort zone in a challenging yet riveting way. I love seeing my students grow and learn to love music even more than I do!
For beginning students who have never touched music in their lives (mostly children), I start out with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book of their chosen instrument. From there, we learn how to read music, play in time, and play the instrument itself. Once the student feels comfortable with the practices in the book, I move on to introduce solo repertoire to prepare for a recital. Of course, if they are in their school band, we will focus on perfecting their given band music. However, if they feel prepared to also take on a solo to learn, I will go so far as to compose the piece to the student's given strengths and write in a challenge or two to keep them improving.
I will admit will full confidence that I am the type of teacher to keep it laid back and casual, but will not let my student stop giving me their full effort. If anything, they will be disappointing themself in the future, and I refuse to allow that to happen. If I do not make my student laugh in the first ten minutes of the lesson, then I have failed to make them comfortable for that lesson. I will always go at my student's pace, but I will give them a little push when they get too comfortable with what we're working on at the time. I set realistic goals for a student, and fully believe in positive reinforcement and acknowledging accomplishments. If my student no longer feels motivated to practice, we change the material to suit what inspires them.
