I focus on indvidualizing the lesson to the student. Every student has different goals, dreams, and personalities. I typically use the Faber Books for piano, Hal Leonard for guitar and ukulele, and I work in sight-reading with my voice students. I also work in music theory when appropriate, and enjoy explaining the "why" behind how music works. I'm also a singer-songwriter and have tunes on Spotify & Apple Music. I write and produce my own songs and have had my compositions performed frequently. I studied my master's in music theory at UTA, and am currently working on publishing articles based on video game musical analysis. I look forward to speaking with you!
My teaching experience began at a young age. I started volunteering lessons for the youth in my church. I played keyboard on the worship team for several years and some youth students showed interest so I would teach them every now and then. In 2017, I started teaching private lessons at a studio in Fort Worth. I really started to enjoy it, and as I kept on teaching for years to come (going on 6 years now), I've just fallen in love with it! I adore seeing the light turn on for students when they understand something. I encourage them to write their own songs, making sure they get to pursue their own interests while learning the necessary basics.
For piano ages 7-12: I typically start with Primer Piano Adventures or Level 1. I also use Keith Snell Scale Skill Levels for skill and chord practices which is helpful for all kinds of music! For guitar and ukulele: Hal Leonard guitar and ukulele method. These books also teach reading the notes in sheet music and understanding how to play them on the guitar or ukulele, as well as including a tab. For voice: We pick different songs to focus on and I do several breathing techniques, sight reading exercises, pitch matching and control, and ear training. I check in with my students every few months to make sure they're enjoying the lessons and see if there is anything we need to do more of that they enjoy.
I believe communication is of the upmost importance. I communicate with parents to let them know how the student is doing, what we are working on, and what to do next. As mentioned above, I tailor to my student's needs based on their understanding and pace. Some students move a little slower than others in certain areas, and some move faster. For example, one student of the same age may understand sheet music quickly, but have a hard time with scales. Another student may do wonderful scales but have difficulty with sheet music. It all depends on the student. I ask them if they understand, try my best to ensure they do, and make sure to explain anything and the "why" behind certain topics.
