Overview:
A lifelong musician, I'm trained in both classical and jazz on trumpet and piano. I hold a PhD in Musicology (with a focus on the music of Japan) from Cornell University (2018), and regularly perform on both piano and trumpet here in NYC. I write my own music, and also have a repertoire of classics in both the classical and jazz styles. In addition to teaching and playing music, I teach the Chinese and Japanese languages. Although I took a fifteen year break in serious playing between my teenage years as a professional trumpet player and the end of my PhD, I have greatly enjoyed getting back into trumpet performance. Indeed, having “relearned” the instrument is an asset I bring to our lessons with clarity and precise instruction (and understanding!) of the trumpet playing process.
EXPERIENCE
I've been a teacher for 12 years and counting, on a range of subjects: languages (English as a second language, Chinese, and Japanese), writing, music and history, music theory (jazz), and performance (jazz and classical). As a trumpet instructor I have a wide range of repertoire and have studied under some of the top players in the world, including jazz greats Lester Bowie and Wynton Marsalis; I currently study with Joe Magnarelli. Given my experience, I teach both jazz and classical and can recognize the talent for both capacities in my students.
METHODS USED
My approach is repertoire-based, meaning that we learn technique through the demands of particular pieces; I also teach strength-training exercises to help students develop their fullest potential on trumpet. Deriving inspiration from both classical and jazz methods, I also believe in exploring the physical capabilities and limitations of the instrument so that the player can develop a personal relationship to it. Indeed, this relationship forms the crux of true musical expression, which is the overarching goal of my teaching. Although many teachers and performers insist that one is either classically or jazz-inclined, I pride myself on being to recognize and nurture both capacities in my students.
LESSON STYLE
I'm hands-on, affirming, and challenging at the same time: I believe in gently recognizing areas of improvement, which we work on through fostering a positive, "no-wrong-answers" approach. I create a safe space for my students and encourage them to explore all areas and facets of the instrument; in doing so, students are then able to express themselves more dynamically in classical music, and to improvise more creatively in jazz. I draw my inspiration from my teachers past, as well as my favorite musicians-- trumpet and otherwise.
