At this time I do not have any degrees in music. I learned from other teachers and more importantly, playing with other musicians. 37 years of playing, in fact.
I play both guitar and bass. Guitar is acoustic and electric, lead and rythym. Bass is 4 and 5 string. As I have learned from these instruments you have to come from different fields of thought. They're called guitars but thats where it ends. I love all things music. I want to share the joy of making and playing music. When it comes to teaching theory, I always say that if you can count to 8, than you can write a popular song you would hear on the radio.
I have toured the world 5 times and have been on US and Worldwide radiostations, had 3 songs that I co-wrote get submitted for Grammy consideration, have been on 9 albums and performed on several national, international and local TV stations. I have had 14 songs on the airwaves in the last 5 yrs with various bands and performers. Recorded and submitted some music for a couple of upcoming TV shows airing this 2013 season.Currently, I am on hiatus from working with an Award Winning Country Rock artist. I play on average 160 shows a year.
I feel that if a student is just banging away at notes without getting the big picture of how everything works it can be frustrating and fruitless. I like to teach as we play a song. I think you are able to benefit by using the theory and techniques as the song progresses. I can teach out of a book if the student/parent would prefer. I do customize songs to the age and interests of the student.
I find out what styles a student likes, favorite bands and songs. Also, what they want to get out of learning a particular intstrument. Is it for fun, to be on stage and perform, to write songs, etc. Once a student starts seeing how all songs are connected the whole music scene opens up.
