I am an experienced Guitar Teacher and retired Band Director and Orchestra Teacher. I've been teaching for 20+ years, with students age 5 to 85. My main instruments are guitar (acoustic and electric, all styles, including Classical, Rock, Jazz, and Blues), electric bass, and ukulele. I also teach Beginning Piano, Clarinet, and Saxophones.
After graduating from Colorado State University (B.Music Education, 1980) I taught privately and in public schools in New Mexico, Washington and California. I also performed in many rock, blues and jazz bands as well as performing Classical Guitar in recitals and restaurants. I most enjoy working with elementary school-age and middle school-age students.
I've been teaching Guitar since I was an undergrad. I began teaching in public schools in 1985 and have taught Guitar, Band, and Orchestra at the Elementary, Middle and High School level. My main instrument is guitar (classical guitar, folk, rock, blues, jazz, country, pop. etc.); I also play and teach electric bass (rock, jazz, country, etc.) and ukulele (all styles). I've taught students from age 5 to 85; I specialize in elementary- age, middle school, and high school- age students, but I enjoy working with adults as well.
For beginning students who are children, I use a variety of methods, including Hal Leonard's Children's Guitar Method, Suzuki methodologies (I am NOT a Suzuki-certified teacher), and materials I've developed over my 25 year teaching career. I emphasize basic technique for the left and right hands, and I make sure they learn the basics of reading music. For older students (middle school-age to adult), I tend to let the student lead. If s/he wants to learn classic rock, I teach classic rock. If s/he wants to learn to read music, I facilitate that.
