I’m a fun, energetic teacher who believes in a student center philosophy. Students have fun when they are taught what they want to learn. My job is to teach them what they want to learn and how to approach and accomplish that goal. I will always take into consideration who is learning, why are they wanting to learn, what is their objective/goal, when would they like to accomplish this goal, and how WILL they achieve it. Music education should be fun, non-stressful, and help build character. My education at the University of Florida has helped me understand what students are capable of doing at certain ages. Our brains can only do so much at a certain age. I believe in practicing slow and understanding how each student learns. Some of us are visual learners, some are aural, some kinesthetic and some perfect all the above. I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure I teach to your style.
I started teaching percussion in 2011 at Forest High School. I taught their drum line for four years, until I went to the University of Florida in 2015. We received straight superiors at FBA ever year I taught there. I since have taught private lessons at First Baptist Church since 2012 with a 2 year break due to Marching band at UF. I’ve also been involved in the public school system, teaching at places like Grace school, Fort King Middle school, and Forest High School. I enjoye watching students grow in confidence and maturity.
My method of teaching can vary from student to student, but my primary way of teaching is what I like to call, sound before symbol. Learning music is like learning a language. We do not come out of the womb and handed a dictionary. Instead, we listen, imitate, speak, and then learn how to read and write. If I have students try to learn how to read music, while focusing on technique and all the other aspects of music, they become very overwhelmed and frustrated. Having a simple and focused goal for each lesson that the student CAN achieve is vital. In this way they feel successful and have fun!
My teaching style is very high energy, fun, and rewarding. Watching students grow in confidence as they progress is my favorite part of being a teacher. In the arts, we are always being criticized. For example, how can one person love a song/band and another one feel they are horrible? We all have a preference to what we like and I feel we should only judge ourselves by where we have been and where we are at currently. I am a father of three lovely children from the ages of 3-15. They have really helped me better understand they way kids are and how much you can hurt their confidence or manifest it!
Mr. S. is an amazing teacher. He is teaching my daughter the drums. He is patient, fun, very energetic, and works hard to help. Keep doing what you love!
Mr. Jimmy has been such a blessing to our son and to our family. Our son began taking lessons from Mr. Jimmy about a year ago and has made huge strides thanks to Mr. Jimmy’s positive reinforcement, obvious care and passion for his trade. Mr. Jimmy thoroughly enjoys what he does and genuinely loves his students. It shows in all that he does. He is a gifted musician, drummer and teacher. We have enjoyed having him as extension of our family.
Our son has been taking lessons with Jimmy for a few months and has learned so much already. Jimmy approaches lessons in a fun, energetic way that truly engages the student!
We know Jimmy for 2 years, great teacher, has the experience, discipline and very charistmatic. Our son enjoys every drums class and thanks to him, He wants to continue and want to play other instruments. He is amazing. The Paez Family
