Professional Certificate in Guitar Performance, Atlanta Institute of Music.
Overview:
Compared to most musicians, I started playing guitar "late in life" at the age of 13. As most teenagers do, I started by learning and playing songs by Nirvana, Blink-182, and of course, Metallica riffs. Although I never strayed too far from punk rock during high school, my musical tastes and abilities really expanded when I attended the Atlanta Institute of Music. While there, I studied Rock, Jazz, Classical, Blues, Slide, and more. After graduating from there in 2005, I moved to Nashville, TN and began touring the country with local artists. Most of my touring days were as lead guitarist, although sometimes I did take on a more rhythm & acoustic role. It was also in Nashville that I began to learn and love Fingerpicking guitar in the style of Chet Atkins. My main focus at this time in my personal playing is split between fingerpicking and jazz.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching guitar off and on for almost twenty years, beginning in high school. Through private in-home lessons, as well as via music store, I've taught students of all ages and skill levels. After high school, I began attending the Atlanta Institute of Music. While there, I studied Rock, Jazz, Classical, Blues, Slide, and more. METHODS USED
For most students, especially beginners, I use a combination of the Berklee materials, including Modern Method for Guitar, as well as my own teachings. I like to get my students to a level at which they can actually make/play music first, using their current favorite genre of music. The sooner they can make sounds on the instrument that resemble something close to "music," the sooner they'll fall in love with the instrument. Once they have reached that level, we then dive in to music theory, guitar specific theory, sight-reading, and all of the other necessary areas of music that tend to deter most potential students.
LESSON STYLE
I like to get my students to a level at which they can actually make/play music first, using their current favorite genre of music. The sooner they can make sounds on the instrument that resemble something close to "music," the sooner they'll fall in love with the instrument. Once they have reached that level, we then dive in to music theory, guitar specific theory, sight-reading, and all of the other necessary areas of music that tend to deter most potential students. Starting with the theory and then working towards actually making music is a long road that usually results in a student quitting before they've reached any major milestones. I try to avoid that teaching "music" first.
