I have solid and extensive experience in teaching instrument technique, improvisation, and sight reading. I've been teaching since 2012, ranging from beginners all the way to highly advanced levels, with focus either on jazz or classical music. I've worked as a freelance musician in a multitude of genres all over the world, and taught both privately and at several universities. Many of my students are now working musicians in their own right. I'm an active performer and studio recording artist, and a large portion of my day-to-day consists of writing and recording horn section parts for music in a variety of genres.
My experience as a teacher spans from advanced college students working on technique and improvisation, all the way to helping beginners play their first notes on the trombone. Before relocating to LA, I was on faculty at the University of Texas Arlington and taught jazz trombone lessons, ensembles, and brass pedagogy. At the University of North Texas, I spent several years directing big band ensembles, while also privately teaching arranging and composition. As such I have a well-rounded skill set and can confidently help my students find the direction in building theirs, depending on their goals and interests.
The lessons are structured and built around the needs of each individual student. We begin by exploring strengths and weaknesses, and then customize materials and methods based on this. At the center of my pedagogical philosophy is a style of learning built on positive reinforcement, using methods that are supported by research on brain development and learning. For older students that are more driven, we also spend more time on developing effective strategies for individual practice, and together we set clear developmental goals.
I have an easy-going style of teaching where I focus on the interests of the student first. The reality of learning an instrument is that unless practice is fun and interesting, there will not be enough of it. As such, I make sure to gamify the practice and find concrete ways to measure the progress of the student. In the end, I find that building a deep interest and encouraging a passion for music is a sure-fire way for students to grow as musicians while enjoying the journey at the same time.
I have studied with Joakim for 8 1/2 years and have been 100% pleased with him. I consider him a friend, as well as an exceptional teacher. Our lessons have always been positive and uplifting; we have worked on trombone fundamentals, improvisation, recording techniques, music theory, running a band, sound systems, etc. — really, the whole gamut of music and the music business. Joakim was recommended by a friend and student of his. I am so glad I began, and have continued, studying with him. He is always prompt and prepared for our lessons and very flexible in scheduling and rescheduling, when necessary. All lessons are followed with a written synopsis of what we covered, plus practice exercises and techniques that specifically address the areas of interest that we worked on. I highly recommend Joakim to anyone interested in growing as a trombonist and musician.
Joakim is a friendly and supportive teacher. His approach is very methodical and flexible for different learning styles. I would highly recommend!
I am currently taking arranging and Logic lessons from Joakim and have learned a ton! His organization, attention to detail, and playing are second to none. Any student on any instrument would benefit from studying with this seasoned professional and educator.
We have an autistic 10-year old boy. Joakim is very patient and professional. He is always prompt and has good communication. He is very talented and can slow to your exact pace. He has started teaching Michael some of him favorite tunes right away. Highly recommended!!
I don’t think I could have wished a better choice than Joakim! I personally came to him after a LOOOOONG break in my playing. Like almost 15 years bro… And Joakim always made me feel comfortable in my playing and it’s so easy to follow the lesson plans each week. It is so great to have a professional trombone player be so humble and really get the joy of playing an instrument that is so dear to me too. I regained my confidence in playing and remembered just how much I LOVE to do it! Now I am better than I thought I would ever be again. 10/10 would recommend. Don’t hesitate, because you will not be disappointed. Happy playing!
