I am a passionate and motivated instructor who specializes in working with young beginning musicians. My experience as a former elementary school general music teacher and band director has provided me with the insight to support students to succeed in those environments. Music has afforded me the opportunity to travel the world as a performer and, it is my goal to support my students so they may also have the same experiences. I look forward to working with your family in fostering your child's musical journey.
I have 14 years of experience working with Elementary and Middle School aged musicians in a variety of capacities. I began my career as a Band Director, working with at-risk students in an after school program which served both Coachella Valley and Desert Sands unified school district. I later took a position with San Marcos Unified School District as a k-5 general music teacher, working with a student body of 1100 students on multiple focus areas, including group piano, musical theater, instrumental music and vocal music. I have also worked with a contemporary community music school in San Diego with a "Rock" Focus, working with elementary and middle school drummers, vocalists, guitarists and pianists to form their own bands.Currently, in addition to teaching privately, I am an Arts Department Substitute Teacher for La Jolla Country Day School, working with both their band and orchestra programs in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools. I also work seasonally with Art 4 Children in North County, as Music Director for Seasonal Camps and classes.
I believe in a student-centered, play based, approach to music education. Because of this, I have developed a line of supplemental materials and games which can be customized to meet the interests and ability levels of my students in a developmentally appropriate mannor. I also have an indepth understanding of all of the most popular band methods (Accent on Achievement, Essential Elements, Standards of Excellence, Sound Innovations etc) and can jump in to help band students to meet the expectations of their school band directors. .
I like to teach to the interests and ability levels of my students. I believe in keeping lessons light and fun, while maintaining a strong emphasis on guiding my students toward becoming musically literate. A typical lesson for a younger student may include board games and coloring pages in addition to traditional "on instrument" time. I also strive to integrate technology in to my lessons, whether by using iOS apps as teaching supplements, or by monitoring home practice through a "flipped" classroom approach.
