Overview:

Hi I'm Joanna and have been teaching 25 years 31/2 to 80 years old.. I teach piano in sight reading, theory, chords, composition, transposing. I have a passion to teach my students dynamics and build up their confidence. In voice I teach breathing techniques and also studied Alexander for 4 years, I develop their confidence and help with auditions for competitions and theater arts. I competed in voice and piano in my middle school years I write classical contemporary music and perform in different venues throughout San Diego and riverside. I graduated in dordt college and sand and toured elite choirs. I also lead worship in a church and do the music. I have had 3 projects of music including contemporary classical music.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching since my early years in college. I got really involved when my son was born and was asked to start teaching fundamental music class. The business grew and started having students coming to my house. It is a passion to see the child achieve and get lead roles in music theater or compete in a piano competition and receive a ribbon. To see my students eye light up talking about their experience and see how confident they have grown as a vocalist. I desire my students to have a real good experience in music and understanding that music is an amazing language. I really try to strive practicing lessons, but some students are not able to practice as much. I desire to encourage them to keep learning because it helps in discipline which an instrument takes that to practice.

METHODS USED

I use little Mozarts for children who are autistic, learning disabilities and under 5 years old. We have a wonderful time and sometimes younger children need a parent or caregiver to help them online. It is so amazing and fun to see them understand and get big smiles on their faces. The curriculum has a way of approach music more fundamental, theory in a fun way and also how to play the piano. The child learns value of the notes and sight reading even at a very young age they are able to learn. 6-adult I use a variety of books Faber, because it is very creative and the songs are very fun. Bastien when the child desires to learn key signatures, chords, I teach them in hand positions to help them feel comfortable in learning piano high Schoolers and adults I use Bastien and Alfred. I also sometimes use Thompsom and they are books that move more quicker. In voice I teach breathing, technique, pronounce, dictation, match pitch, strengthen the voice and opening vowels. The voice is a instrument so It also does well with dynamics. I love building confidence in the students life

LESSON STYLE

. I really desire the child to enjoy lessons. I like to build their confidence that they are achieving. I'm strict in how I teach the language of music. I don't half way teach and desire my students to be able to sight read music and understand timing. If i have a student that doesn't understand I explain in in math and they have all understood how important timing is. Students work at their pace and have some students work very fast and move quickly while others are slower. Just because the student moves at a slower pace doesn't mean they aren't learning, but it takes them a bit to understand. I m a very patient teacher and have worked with many children with different needs and very young children.

Lessons have been great so far. My daughter has been a bit shy to sing on her own but Joanna has been amazing in trying to encourage her to come out of her shell.

We adore Ms. Joanna! My 5 yo was asking for piano lessons and Joanna is a wonderful fit. She is kind, patient, encouraging and uses a compassionate approach. She provides positive feedback and quickly observed my daughter’s needs and sensitive personality and also increased her confidence. We are so fortunate that Joanna can complete classes on zoom and we love working with her and learning from her weekly.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
