I am a music teacher in the public schools and have been for fifteen years. I graduated from University of Northern Iowa with A Bachelors in Teaching Music. I then got my Masters in the Art of Teaching at Coe College. I love to find those little moments when a student finally gets how to do something. Every student has the ability to play and instrument and need to find out how to master the gift of music. For the past 2 years I have sung with Chorale Midwest. During 2016 I toured in Europe singing with this group.
My teaching experience goes back to when I was little and worked with my friends who were not as fortunate as I and taught them how to pay piano. When I was little I had no confidence and music was the way I chose to express myself. I always look for those Ah Ha moments when students finally learn music. Through lessons I chose to meet them where they are at and help the get to where they want to be. I encourage extra performances, Church, school etc. I hope have a studio recital every year during the summer.
I truly feel that meeting the students where they are at. At the first lesson I would bring the music necessary for lesson and get to know them. I would introduce solo repertoire and teach notes and musicianship through these lessons. I think that given the opportunity ALL students can succeed. This is done through repetition and practice. I try to find what type of music the students are interested in an first focus on those and then expand their thoughts. We will always be working on more than one piece at a time.
Each student will work at his or her own pace. I will help the students set goals for the week, a month, and a year. We will then reflect on where we are at that time. The student and I will be working together to find out how they can be successful. I will find out the students likes through lessons and work to expand their thoughts. I will always remind them that ALL MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC TO SOMEONE. The students and I will help them reach their full potential and then some. Every student can learn music.
