Music is a big part of my life. I started playing trumpet in the fifth grade and eventually went to the University of Toledo where I received my bachelor and masters in music education. I have been a band director for thirteen years and have much experience starting students on all instruments. My college training and my years so far as a band director have helped me to learn how to play all of the instruments in the band. I feel very comfortable playing and teaching these instruments.
I have had experience teaching lessons ever since I was in college. I have developed into a highly effective teacher, motivator, and musician throughout the years and feel confident that my students will succeed when they take lessons with me. Practice has helped me to reach the level I am at, and that is one of the main things I will stress. Yes, the musical aspects of the lesson are important, and they are addressed at every lesson, but to refine and perfect those musical aspects students must practice. It is my hope that everyone who takes lessons will, at the least, find the talent that will bring them enjoyment for the rest of their lives.
I choose music that will help students in many different areas. Students need some music that will help them work on fundamentals: long tones, slurs, articulations, and scales. Students also need to play music they enjoy. All of my students, in addition to the fundamentals of good playing, bring in music that is enjoyable to play and that they like. It is a good balance when practicing.
I am a friendly, calm teacher which is my style. I motivate my students a lot but do it in a positive way. All my students understand that they ultimately decide whether not they will have success or not, no one else. It is my job to guide you and to give you advice, but in the end the student must be the one who does the work. Students who think in this way usually do have the most success.
