Bachelor Degree: Calvin University
I graduated from Calvin University studying music composition and jazz guitar. What first got me into music was the idea of creating my own sound. From the moment I picked up the guitar I was interested in recording and producing music. Over the years I have gone onto record songs in a number of genres. There are so many things I now know about music that I wish I knew when I started playing. I would love to help you accomplish your musical goals and get you playing the guitar with control and ease.
I started teaching four years ago as a freshman in college. I have had a number of students over the years and have developed my own music curriculum. The reason learning an instrument is often so frustrating is because no one takes the time to teach a student the underlying logic of music. No one helps the student understand how music actually works. Without this fundmaental understanding of music, playing music only ever feels like trying to crack an impossible code. Without knowing the basic logic of music, music never makes sense. It is only memorized, never understood. I am commited to helping my students truly understand music. The result is students that see music as a language they can speak and not an impossible code. With our training together, you will be able to have eaxactly what you want come out of your fingers when you sit down to play the guitar.
I am happy to teach all styles of music from classical to R&B guitar. However, what I get most excited about as a teacher is helping students understand the fundamental logic of music. I want to help my students know what they are hearing when they listen to music and know how to play what they are hearing. If students are able to grasp these things, music will truly become a medium of expression for them. They will not have to memorize chords and fingerings in order to play something that sounds good. They will be able to play in real time what they are hearing in their head.
My lessons start with the student. I am not interested in making my students play music they themselves do not want to play. For this reason I always start with students by asking them their goals and what music they get excited about. After these things are identified I then get right into the music. I do not waste time going over chords or scales if it will not help my students play the music they want to play. I only over music theory and technical knowledge in so far as it relates to the music they want to play.
