I am a drummer and percussion teacher who loves what he does. It is important for people to know that I believe students can learn in a variety of ways: From a book, by ear and by gaining experience as a performer in various venues. I love to teach all ages of students. I graduated in 1997 with an associates degree that focused on music theory and music history. I have been performing since the age of 10 (which means I have been doing this for almost 30 years now and I try to bring all of those experience, as well as my long teaching experience to the table. Besides being a drum teacher I have also been certified to teach staff how to work with people who have disabilities, and that teaching experience, while completely different from that of teaching drums, has helped me become a better over all instructor. I have had much success on a regional and local level and during the 2000-2002 era, toured internationally with a group called "Gabriel's Harp". I would love to bring all of this to your student, no matter what age they are or what goals they are looking to acheive.
I have taught drums for over twenty years. Though I had to take a 2 year hiatus from 2014-2016, I have maintained a performance and practice routine for myself and kept in touch with those students I had at the time who continue to call me today and ask questions. Now that I am back to teach some of them are even coming back. I have taught out of stores as well as my home studio. I teach anything from Classical to rock to jazz to Metal and everything in between. My specialites are as follows but are not limited to: Odd – Time Signatures Snare coordination Music Theory and History Rudiments based instruction Writing and reading music Playing for the song Preparing youth for high school, college and beyond Teaching Experience: Teaching Drums privately in Madison and its suburbs, WI Feb 2008- Present Taught Drums at JB Music in Stoughton, WI Feb 2007- 2008 Taught Drums in Chicago, IL privately 2005-2007 Taught Drums and Bass at Berea Music in Berea, OH 2002-2004 Taught Drums Privately in Cleveland, Ohio area 1996-2005
I have been teaching drums off and on while maintaining other work for almost 20 years. While other teachers may always say "Practice makes Perfect" I say something different. "Practice makes permanent". For me, this means that yes, if you practice something every day you will get better at it - but what if you practice it wrong! That is why I have an open call/door policy. I would much rather a student call me and say "I don't think I am doing this right" and let me re-explain something instead of them just to continue practicing it wrong - once you practice something 7 times it is usually in their for good. If someone does a technique wrong for 7 months, it will probley take me 17 to fix it and break the habit. I use several books for my students but two of my favorites are both written by Louie Bellson. "Modern Reading Text in 4/4 time" and "Modern Reading text in odd-time" - They are different books than most use, and I use them especially for my jazz students but I have fount them to be invaluable. I have also used Hal Leonard's material. I try to incorporate listening to music as much as possible, videos and anything else I think a student of today might be interested in. I focus strongly on rudiments and fundimentals with beginning students but also incorporate those right away into what every style they wish to learn. You'd be amazed at what a "Flam-Tap" can do while learning a Metallica song.
I have been teaching drums and percussion privately for over 20 years. I focus on the interests of his students and teach in different musical styles such as classical, jazz, rock and metal. I can prepare someone for school band, or take an advanced student to another level preparing for a career in the music business. Other than snare and drum-set I can teach Latin and African instruments, marimba, bells and various other percussion instruments. My lessons will range from learning fundamentals such as sticking techniques and rudiments, to advanced techniques such as single and double bass drumming, odd-time, and grove passed patterns. As a student, you will learn music theory, reading music, sight reading and playing by ear. Most importantly is to do something that you really enjoy doing, so if we aren't taking the adventure that you want, it is time to get a different ticket :)
