I am a musician who wants to share and instill the love and passion of music. I have experience working with members of bands such as Halestorm, the Gene Simmons band, Alice Cooper, Beasto Blanco, Sponge, and more, as well as Broadway stars such as Sutton Foster and Laura Bell Bundy. I take these experiences as well as my extensive training (BM Belmont University) and performance history (Red Light Angels, Anne Frankenstein) to help not only teach my students to sing but to give them the tools to succeed. We focus on more then just breathing, we focus on performing and believing the song.
I have been teaching private lessons since 2009. I specialize in commercial styles (pop, rock, jazz, country, etc.) as well as musical theater. I encourage creativity with my students and through unusual means I have found success in getting those good habits down. As a songwriter and long time frontman I support and help with my students desire to write their own music and find their performance style. My students in Nashville('10-'18) joked I give rockstar lessons not voice lessons. I have had the chance to play some of the biggest as well as some of the smallest stages. I've spent time on tour and in the studio and am able to share the knowledge those experiences gave me with my students.
For beginners I like to start with the basics of how the voice works and the proper techniques to use it. We always spend time at the end singing something they want to sing, it's important to not feel pressured into music. We will build a repertoire of songs the student is connected to and work towards a set list for a showcase. My more advanced students, I enjoy pushing them in ways that don't seem to make sense but when they feel the change in their voice they understand. My lessons are fun because we make sure to keep the focus on the music. Singing isn't just about your vocal chords, there is so much more to explore with in it.
I hated school when I was younger. I will never let my lessons feel like school. We work at each individual students pace. Once warm-ups and whatever key technique we are talking about that day are covered the lesson turns more into an educationally structured band practice. My students know they can let go and just sing. If something needs to be worked on, we work on it, and I will give notes and how to fix things throughout. I have found that taking time in my lessons to become equals really has a positive effect on my students. When you are singing and I accompany you we are on the same level and it is good to feel that power in singing, and music in general. I want my students to find their passion and own it.
