2022 - Associate Creative Director, Orchestr na dotek, Prague Symphony Orchestra
I am a third-year undergrad at NYU, studying Music Education with a concentration in instrumental performance—and I love it! Currently, I am working on the last of my classwork before student teaching full time. I hope to graduate in May 2024 with a B.M. in Music Education and my NYSED pK-12 certification. I play clarinet with the NYU Wind Symphony, where I'm also Operations Manager, as well as the NYU Orchestra 2, Tisch New Theater pit orchestra, and as a soloist. I am especially passionate about performing a diverse array of works by living composers and contemporary music of all kinds.
I am incredibly fortunate to have access to the resources at NYU and to love teaching music more and more every day: I have had practical experience in woodwind, brass, string, voice, and percussion pedagogy, as well as music in early childhood and for students of all abilities. My teachers include Jason Noble (instrumental conducting), Paul Speiser (choral conducting), Kim McCord (childhood/special ed music pedagogy), Ethan Hein (electronic music pedagogy), and Christopher Bush (clarinet performance). I am especially proud of the time I lived in the Czech Republic to study music education with Klara Boudalova and worked to create a concert for young audiences with the Prague Symphony Orchestra.
Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. For adolescent and adult students, I believe in creating custom lessons that will help them grow as well-rounded musicians and achieve their musical goals. Using music relevant to the student, we'll explore performance, composition and improvisation with the instrument of their choosing (wind, strings, voice, electronics, etc.).
My teaching style is heavily student focused: By listening to my student's voice and choice, I want to work together to create musical goals for them that we can develop as we progress. While I believe in creating a learning environment focused on intrinsic motivation, I hope my positive attitude and love for music can serve as a source of inspiration for my students! The most important aspect of any lesson is the joy that we bring to it, which is crucial to us developing musical skills and beautiful music.
