Joey R. is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist and educator from Riverwoods, IL. He found his love for music at the age of nine while hearing John Coltrane’s monumental solo on “Giant Steps.” It was in this moment that Joey began his lifelong journey in sound. Joey’s years in school were fruitful; he shared the stage with Patti Austin, Shelly Berg, Gloria Estefan, Alan Ferber, Quincy Jones, Brian Lynch, Barry Manilow, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Charlie Watts, and John Williams. It was also at the University of Miami where Joey discovered his love for doubling; playing the flute and clarinet in addition to the saxophone. He has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Chicago Symphony Center, Ravinia Festival, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, the Chicago Jazz Showcase, and the Monterey Jazz Festival.
While Joey loves to preform, he is passionate about teaching. He has been teaching since 2011. His teaching career began through the non-profit Bravo Waukegan in their Bravo Buddies Summer Camp. He began as the woodwind instructor and through the years worked to become the Artistic Director, managing all aspects of the month long camp. Joey has also served as the Director of Bands for Sistema Ravinia in Lake County and has worked as a teaching artist with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and for the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.
I like to make things fun and cater to each student's abilities and needs. I like to work from books with beginning students because music literacy is very important to me. As students develop, I begin ear training and diving deeper into music theory when necessary. I think in order to grow as a musician you need to play music that inspires you and I aim to have all students wanting to practice because they are excited about their repertoire. I try to make showcase opportunities, at home recordings, and performances as much as possible.
It's important for me to know my students personally! I want to know what other hobbies you have and what inspires you. I can give a little "tough love" when it's required and I like to push my students to apply themselves on their instrument. I also have a growth mindset and acknowledge that everyone learns differently. I want to figure out how each of my students learn optimally. I want to make things achievable and break music down into digestible, accomplishable targets. I want to empower my students to find their sound!
