Joseph enjoys an active career as a performer and educator. He is a member of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra in Jackson, Tennessee, and is principal trumpet of the Psallos Chamber Orchestra. A native of Jackson, Moore completed his undergraduate work at Union University where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree, studying trumpet performance with Tom Grant and Dennis Smith, and music composition with Daniel Musselman. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree in trumpet performance from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he studied with internationally-acclaimed soloist Richard Stoelzel. He has had additional lessons with Marvin Perry, Stephen Burns, and Alex Freund. As an orchestral musician, Moore has performed with the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, Palm Beach Opera Orchestra, Balmoral Chamber Orchestra, Opera McGill, and the Psallos Chamber Orchestra. With Psallos, he recorded and premiered its two major works: Romans and Hebrews. As an active soloist, Joseph has been featured with high school and collegiate orchestras and wind ensembles, including the Jackson Symphony Youth Orchestra, Union University Symphony Orchestra, and the Union University Symphonic Band. He was featured as a guest artist for the Spring 2018 Season at the Tennessee Technological University School of Music. At the 2017 Union University Scholarship Banquet, Moore premiered Cody Curtis’s Stories of Sacrifice, a commission by Union University for Psallos, for Former President George W. Bush. An advocate for music education, he has taught privately and given masterclasses to students in middle school, high school, and college in the Western Tennessee region. His students have placed first and second prizes in the West Tennessee Solo and Ensemble Festival, as well as other State and Regional competitions. He currently teaches privately in the West Tennessee region, and maintains a studio in the Community Music Center Program at Union University.
I have taught privately for the past five years. My students have ranged from eleven years old to college-age students in their late teens and early twenties. I love teaching for many reasons. I see a student as not just a musician, but as a complete person. Each student is very different, and I want to help them find their voice and their ability. My students have placed in honor bands, including the West Tennessee Solo and Ensemble Festival, and in this competition have won first prizes for both ensemble and solo competitions. They have also gone on to place in marching band competitions.
Every student no matter the age must have a solid foundation of fundamentals. If the technical foundation doesn’t exist, then it is much harder to play music that we love. Development doesn’t happen overnight, but rather it is a lifelong process. With every student, no matter the age, I use the Arban Complete Method, Clarke Technical Studies, Cichowicz Long Tone Studies, Stamp warm ups, and other books as needed. I believe that in these books are the foundation of all the technique we need to play music as trumpet players, though I will say that there are many other books out there which I can substitute depending on the needs of the student.
I believe each student learns differently because they are distinctly different. Each student has a distinct personality that informs how they think as musicians. No matter what background that student has, and no matter what they think, I can show them how to achieve their potential. Every student I teach I teach as a complete person, and my biggest goal in teaching music is to help that student learn to love music and their instrument more when their lesson is over than they did at the beginning. I don’t want to make every student be me. I want every student to realize their potential, and through the use of different method books I want to help them formulate a program of practicing that is exactly for them. There are many different methods that are out there, and not all of them are for every student because each student learns differently. I will help them design a program with the method books that are exactly for them. In this way, I can help them learn to become a complete musician so they will be the best they can be. I want to help students enjoy music and developing as musicians and I promise to make lessons fun and exciting while still being challenging.
