BA, Humboldt State University, Percussion Performance
I am an active percussionist currently based in the San Fernando Valley, but my passion for music has brought me all over the world. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Percussion Performance from Humboldt State University under Dr. Eugene Novotney, I continued my musical studies at the University of Ghana in West Africa, and have since been to 21 different countries in search of exotic sounds and rhythms. I have recorded drumkit and percussion on over a dozen albums, and have internationally and domestically toured with Cleopatra Records artists Hedersleben and Nik Turner’s Hawkwind. I am now exploring my passion for education and sharing my experience to help up and coming players in whatever way I can.
I began teaching at Humboldt State University in 2010, through an education program for children ages 6-15. During the year and a half I worked there, I discovered a genuine love for sharing the passion and enthusiasm I had for music with my students. After 2 1/2 more year of leading student ensembles, teaching children and adults individually and in groups, and giving private lessons out of my home, I have amassed enough experience to feel confident teaching any student passionate about learning.
I like to start younger students off with sticking, familiarity with the instrument, basic rudiments and basic notation/reading. Once they have a grasp on basic rhythmic concepts, I like to teach functional grooves so students can begin to play music with others. My emphasis is peformance, and teaching functional grooves/ideas/fills as well as classic percussion literature helps students feel confident in performing. For older students, I try and help develop the tools needed express themselves in their chosen style.
I have a genuine passion for music, and love to share that with other people. My approach to teaching is to always to share in the enthusiasm for student's individuality of expression. I like to help students set their educational goals based off what their goals are as an artist. With clear and measurable progress, students will gain momentum and confidence to write or perform. Listening to what kinds of musical elements excite and inspire the student also guides my approach in helping them acheive those specific tools to express themselves.
