Hey there, my name is Johnny and thank you for visiting my page! From a young age, I was always steeped in music from my parents. My fondest memories are listening to Acoustic Alchemy with my mother as we drove to elementary school, and my dad playing the Grateful Dead on our way to the mountains to ski. I became interested in playing guitar at 13 and got serious by 16. At the time I was a huge fan of rock, metal, blues, and contemporary metal however, I lacked a musical understanding that was holding my playing ability back from where I was suppose to be at. Taking lessons with Damon Carlucci, I learned how to delve into genres for music knowledge. Here I also learned Jazz and what it meant to be a Jazz musician. Ever since then, I have been using what I have learned to see the notes I want to play on the fretboard and adapt it to whatever setting, feeling or group I am playing in. My name is Johnny and I have been playing guitar since I turned 13. Throughout the many years I have spent playing with other musicians, learning music theory from, (teachers and independent study). Currently playing bass in Morgan and the Mountain and am currently writing a Progressive Metal album, along with writing music for commercial distribution, as well as Jazz, Funk, Neosoul, Rock, Blues, and R&B. I LOVE music and teaching allows me to pass my knowledge and experience to you. Although I lack a classical training, I have learned from musicians who believe in self teaching and refining one's own technique while freely taking inspiration from everything a musician wants to see in their own playing. As a guitar player, I find it is vital a musician learn many styles, genres, and rhythms to be successful.
From beginners to experts, foundational work is key to progressing as a musician. Beginners will start by learning technique, theory, and active listening and music industry 'must haves'. More advanced students will go into more detail on these subjects with a heavier work load. Expert students will learn what they have missed in the beginner to intermediate and advanced levels. Once the expert students have begun to polish their style, we will go deeper into the music industry and how musicians can work on their brand, image, message, and intent with their music. some lessons will be primarily listening, as it is vital for musicians to have a strong ear, as well as muscle memory with their particular instrument.
I approach teaching with an empty canvas. As i ask questions and listen to responses, we begin to paint that canvas until we have the same metaphorical picture. Once this is established we can build more and more from that initial canvas. I take my time to guide my students into a hands on approach to learning. I do NOT force students to do something they are uncomfortable with, and If the issue ever comes up I will urge my student, chaperone or parent the speak up! The only possible exception to this rule is learning about other genres of music outside of the students scope. This is a method I use to show the similarities and differences between different genres.
