I have taught all kinds of students for over 20 years. I have a Doctorate in music from UCSD, a Mater's from New England Conservatory (Boston), and a Bachelor's from U. South Florida. I have traveled abroad to perform a few times. I have played every kind of music from classical to avant-garde, jazz, with orchestras, in bands, and in churches. But I have been teaching piano to all kinds of people, since I was in college.
I have taught private students, music classes, small groups, and large classes. I teach people for their own enjoyment, or I can teach competitive students as well. I enjoy making house calss or teaching in my own studio. I have found that making a good plan and goals are very helpful to learning, and also making it clear what can be expected and how to practice. I try to make sure that we always find music that is enjoyable. I also have found that doing more than one kind of work helps everything. So we will learn diverse pieces (classical and pop, for example), but also might do a little improvising, or other kinds of playing.
We work together to learn how to practice, and how to play, whatever music you like. I can help you find music that you enjoy, and for some students I create new arrangements of songs they like, at their level. I also have composed pieces that sometimes help the learning. I try very hard to show you how to practice. Instead of focusing on whether a mistake was made (you will know that!), I like to focus on the proper form and technique of playing. The same fundamental practice techniques can be applied to advanced students as well as beginners.
Every student learns in their own way, and I try to get that to happen. When the student really learns, they are excited and so am I! It is great to see students progress, and learn more and more. I try to make each lesson and each student an individual, not a mechanical, cookie-cutter process.
