Overview:
I am a from a long line of musicians and grew up watching my parents lead music in folk bands. In my youth I sang in school choirs and performed in local musicals. In high school I learned music theory for guitar from a local teacher and immediately started playing at local coffee shops and street corners.
In my twenties I traveled around the US playing. I lead various local original rock bands, cover bands & comedy bands. I played open mics and coffee shops and filled in as backup guitarist and vocalist for all manor of local bands.
In these circles I have learned from and taught my fellow musicians and now I want to bring these experiences to you.
EXPERIENCE
The vast majority of my teaching has been peer-to-peer helping my fellow band mates to get to the next level. So many talented musicians start playing by ear but never get the break-through of understanding "all that jargon and lingo." I have helped each and every fellow musician that I have worked with to better understand the theory and frameworks behind the music so that they could craft better songs and better understand the ones they were covering. This is my unique ability and I LOVE helping people get to that next level of understanding.
METHODS USED
Most lessons will be fairly laid back with alot of talk and examples, but not so much of a focus on playing styles. I won't be practicing a song with you over and over again, top to bottom. That's your job at home. When you and I are together we'll be doing a bit of jamming, and alot of analyzing. We're going to learn notes, chords, keys, scales, modes, harmony, melody, improvisation & composition. We're going to spend alot of time understanding listening to the nuances of all these things. You're about to enter the big leagues! Oh, and we won't be doing much if any reading of sheet music.
LESSON STYLE
You do not need to take lessons from me forever. If you are an apt student and ready to make the jump into better understanding the theory behind the music we could play together for as little as a month or as long as you like. I am only looking for students who already have a base of knowledge and a love of playing and know that they are about to invest in a STEP on the way to their next level of playing. I won't prescribe you piles of homework and I am not in this business to make a weekly paycheck. I am in this business to help people who are ready to learn!
