I graduated in 2011 from Appalachian State University with a Bachelorof Music in Voice Performacne and I continued my education at ASU and recieved my Masters of Music in Voice Performance in 2013. During both degrees, I performed mainstage roles such as Nemorino in Donizetti'sElixir of Love, the Witch in Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel, Bastienin Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne, and Gherardo in Puccini's GianniSchicchi, as well as performed solos with the Appalachian Chorale suchas Handel's Messiah and Mendelsohn's Elijah. In the summer of 2014, I participated in the New England Opera Intensive training program in Boston, MA where I sang roles in scenes from various operas. I amcurrently performing in the Opera Carolina chorus, working as a tenorsection leader in the Myers Park United Methodist choir and teachingprivately in the Charlotte area.
I began teaching while in my undergrad in pedagogy classes that helpedus learn the art of teaching voice privately. I acquired severalstudents my last year of my undergrad and my studio grew in to myMaster's. As a part of my assistantship in my Master's, I taught VoiceClasses, which were classes of undergraduate music students whoseprimary instrument was not voice and who were required to take voiceinstruction for their majors, such as Music Education or MusicTherapy. I taught at the classroom level, classes ranged in sizeanywhere from six students to twenty-six students, as well as teachingthese students privately outside of class time. Since graduation, Ihave had students in my private studio with age and experience of vastlevels.
I start off by addressing breath and phonation, even with the mostadvanced singers, because singing, like anything in life, is alwaysabout the fundamental basics. I give students exercises that will helpthe student find their true and most efficient voice. I help buildmuscles that will aid in this as well. It is all about whatever worksfor the student too, because if one thing works for one student, itmay not work for another. It is my job to find what is working bestfor the student so we can together find their most efficient andbeautiful voice.
Like I said before, it is all about finding the true and mostefficient voice. Every voice and different, unique, and beautiful. Ihelp train the voice to function properly and effectively in aclassical style. You can take classical training and use it in anysinging medium. My favorite thing in the world is when a student hasan "Ah ha" moment, where we, together have figured out something thatworks and changes the voice's freedom for the better.
