ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Bachelors Degree in Music Composition with a Minor in Piano, Texas A&M at Commerce Texas, 1980 Masters Degree in Music Composition with a Minor in Music Theory, University of Memphis, 1983 Orff Music Certificate, University of Memphis, 2005.

Awards:

Grant: Fayette County Education Foundation for "Ensemble Music for Children", 2005.

Overview:
I have been teaching young people and adults how to play musical instruments for over 20 years. Currently I conduct after school music programs at the University of Memphis Campus School, CTK Lutheran School in Memphis, and Incarnation Catholic School in Collierville. I also have performed with many local bands in a variety of music styles. I enjoy playing out and I try to instill this natural attraction to music making in all of my students. Most of my students love to perform and we hold two concerts every year.
EXPERIENCE
I have a Masters degree in music composition from the University of Memphis with a minor in music theory. I also have a bachelors degree in music composition from Texas A&M at Commerce Texas with a minor in piano. Since graduating from college i have been conducting after school music programs for many local schools as well as teaching private lessons from my music studio. I also love to perform and have played with many groups over the years in a wide range of musical styles including, RnB, blues, rock, reggae, Latin rock, jazz and electronic music.
METHODS USED
For piano students I highly recommend the Alfreds books for beginners. After you have some background we can work with the music of your choice, classical, jazz, pop, RnB etc. Some of my specialties include teaching people how to turn chord charts into music, how to improvise and how to use music theory to improve your understanding of music. For guitar I do not use any books as I find most guitar method books to be very old fashioned and not inviting to the student. Over the years I have gathered many guitar pieces that are great for improving a student's skills one step at a time, so those are the pieces we will learn with.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is fairly relaxed, a student needs to enjoy the lessons or we are really wasting our time. There is no reason for music lessons to be dreary, almost all of my students enjoy their lessons and have no problem coming back week after week to be challenged again. For advanced students I really want to focus on the music you really want to play. If its your dream to play light classics for friends and family, then we will work on that. If you see yourself playing blues, rock or RnB at your local club, then we can go in that direction too.

I am a beginner adult student. John is extremely knowledgeable and patient. He wants me to play music I enjoy. I appreciate having confidence that he is so accomplished in piano education that that I can ask him any question. It’s unlikely I’ll ever reach a complexity that he won’t be able to help with.

John does a great job inspiring our son to play. He is super excited to keep learning his instrument, looks forward to his lesson every week and is very eager to practice in between.

John S is a great teacher! His feedback is helpful and he is encouraging me to learn songs I never would have thought I could play on the alto saxophone!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
