I have taught for 52 years all types of music, theory. In addition, Zakke Wilde, Dave Sank and Tony Palmucce were some of my successful students. In addition, I have had two Grammy nominated students, as well as numerous music college scholarships and performes. While I believe success is NOT about a teacher when a prospective student achieves success, it is the student who requires a degree o progress each day to get better and better upon their musical goals. Moreover, the teacher who's job is to cultivate and direct is about twenty percent of the equation. With the proper guidance and orchestration , the student propels forward and gets to a level of competency with teach and practice. Some of the world's great artists, have done it this way and I believe for one that this approach works best as a personal direct from teacher to student. While a good teacher is essential, one who can see the scope of ability in a student and work with both the negatives and positives, the teacher herein is as mentioned a small part of the students success. I have had the pleasure of studying with some of the finest musicians in the world, but, this pairing did not necessarily make me a better player, it was taking what they gave me and utilizing those ideas, turning them into artistry. Therein lies the ingrediants for success from a teacher/ student stand point.I started to play when I was nine and at that point, didn't have the ability to progress since my hands like those that age require muscular strength and well as mobility. After learning the guitar and piano, I went on to several other instruments learning the theory and dedication needed to excel. While doing so, I was able to utilize the music theory in an understanding to be able to apply those theory principals to the instrument for better artistry. For example, by learning scales and how to alter the scales for various style, I was able to play different genres, such as Rock, blues, country etc. It is the theory that one needs to learn in order to progress to a level a student wishes at attain. Think of if you were asked, "Can you write me a sentence"? but you didn't know the alphabet, how would you write the sentence? It would be difficult or, impossible to do so without the knowledge of using letters to convey the message. In the same way, without theory of music, one finds one stranded in their development and in need of a musical transfusion. There in, one with a qualified teacher who understands the prospect of music theory to develop this along with the instrument to obtain maximum results.
The key to accomplished lesson program is to wrap the lessons around what a students interests are. For example, if you like rock, then you should study it intently, but also learn the theory of composition, scales, and chord patterns and progressions. Also, one should learn reaning note levels as tab has taken over the industry and while much easier, there always come a time when you may be required to read notes. A good idea in lessons is to encapsulate all areas of music within your dersired area of study so that you can become proficient when called upon to do so. Only with this formula, will a student get to a professional level. Learning songs every week while impostant, is not the whole picture to developing a musica;l, understanding musician.
I like the student to pick their area of interest of musical genre. From there, we develop the style in accordance to the students desire.Chord theory, structure, soloing are all part of the training.Students pick the songs and we take it from there. While method books are available, most are boring examples of how to attain artistry. In our lessons, I use proven individual methods that will enhance the students ability to achieve. We won't play Twinkle, or Mary Had A Little Lamb, instead, we will put together a package that will involve the student in their own style and comfort level. We will learn chord theory, progressions, soloing by the use of various scales and working with artistry that will enable the student to develop not only the style of desire, but an individual approach to their artistry.
Teaching style is derived from my own techniques proven to develop the style and success needed to achieve. No method books or corny techniques are utilized. We don't use boring teaching method books, but formulate a concise direct approach to artistry. We will learn songs and style that the student will chose, then, incorporate all aspects of theory, scales, progressions as will as pedagogy to enhance not only the playing level of a student, but, a total and thorough understanding of music that will allow the student to progress to a professional level.
Great teacher and person!!
John makes things easier in lessons as his vast experience having taught rock stars and Grammy students much easier. Plus, he directs us toward goals that we set when we first start lessons. GREAT teacher!!
John has helped me become a performer which was my goal from the beginning. Great teacher
I have been in lessons with John for several years. Each lesson is dazzling and I learn so much, especially theory that I utilize in my playing.
John was a student of Christopher Parkening. He also taught Zakke Wilde and Dave Sank if Skid Row fame. That's all I needed to know!!
I was lost in lessons from teacher to teacher, then, I heard about John and his amazing teaching which enabled me to understand music rather than jyst playing!Great instruction!
