Overview:
I was born in Cwmafan, South Wales, UK.into a house where the Welsh Language was spoken and sung. I was educated in Sandfields Comprehensive School, Hull then Cardiff Universities, where I studied with renowned Welsh composer Alun Hodinott. I taught in the London School system for several years. I emigrated to the USA in 1975, living and performing in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and then moving to Phoenix in 1989. I've enjoyed the cultural and musical variety of traveling and living in many great locations.
EXPERIENCE
Music is a gift that I feel drawn to share with others. I hope to enable my students to experience the pleasure of being a part of the musical community and passing the gift of music on to others. High school Class Teacher (London School System) Instructor (Academy of Celtic Studies, Phoenix) Lecturer (Maricopa County Community Colleges) Teacher/course designer AmeriCymraeg [On-line Welsh classes] Tutor (Cwrs Cymraeg, [Immersion Welsh week]) Private tutoring and lecturing for 30+ years (Welsh Language and Music)
METHODS USED
The advantages of private lessons over in-class tuition are legion. All children learn differently, no matter how old, and if I can recognize the student's specific needs - be it confidence, focus, a goal - the classes can be tailored to meet individual needs. Another advantage is rate of progress. In class the faster learners can lose interest as the slower struggle to keep up. All can arrive at the destination but not all take the same path.
LESSON STYLE
Playing/singing music is the goal but just working on the ability to play/sing a piece is only half the battle. The instrument is owed attention. Without good, solid technique acquired from scales, exercises, balance/hand position, etc., a partnership with the instrument cannot develop. Without that partnership, performance will be proficient at best; the magic will be missing.
