Overview:
I love music and teaching my students the art of creating music is one of the greatest experiences any person can achieve. I was born and raised in Florida where I received my Bachelor of Music degree from Florida State University and Master of Music degree from the University of South Florida, where I was also a teaching assistant in the trombone studio and a music appreciation course. I left Florida to pursue my Doctorate at CCM in Cincinnati and I now live in Chicago. I have performed with several orchestras throughout my academic career as well as teaching privately since my undergrad.
EXPERIENCE
In addition to teaching trombone, music appreciation, and tutoring music theory, I have performed with the Tallahassee Symphony, Sinfonia Gulf Coast Orchestra, Lebanon Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Southwest Florida Symphony, and several other orchestras, wind bands, musicals, chamber groups, and jazz ensembles throughout Florida and Ohio. My father is an organist and so my upbringing has always been around classical music, but I have learned that all types of music are based on the same principles: solid technique, good concept of sound, and creative expression. These are the principles that make music fun and exciting for both the student and the teacher and form the basis of my teaching philosophy.
METHODS USED
I have a variety of method books, solos, and exercises to work with, but I like discovering the music that each student finds both challenging and rewarding rather than expecting every student to work on the same material.
LESSON STYLE
As a music teacher, it is my passion to inspire my students to create music at every level. Establishing good technique and fundamentals are important to mastering any art; they are the means by which music is expressed. My primary focus, however, is that performing music should always be fun and exciting. To this end, I believe that even playing simple scales and fundamental exercises should be musical and creative. This allows the greatest amount of flexibility and freedom when my students apply these fundamentals to the songs or solos they want to perform.
