I am a drummer, composer, bandleader, multi-instrumentalist, and educator based in Philadelphia. I am a graduate of the University of the Arts with a bachelor's degree in jazz instrumental performance. I have performed and recorded with various artists at different venues throughout Philadelphia and New York. I have experience playing a variety of musical styles: Jazz, Funk, Rock, Pop, Country, Musical Theater, Blues, etc. I have played notable music festivals and prominent music venues such as 2017 Monterey Jazz Festival, Pleasantville Music Festival, Brooklyn Bowl, The 55 Bar, World Cafe Live, The Iridium, and several others. In closing of 2019, three songs that I recorded drums on with NY based artists, Mosa and Andrew Weiss & Friends, were featured on Billboard, American Songwriter, and Glide Magazine. In addition, I have my own project, called “Wack Cheddar” which is a Philadelphia based jazz-funk-rock band. We released our first EP in July 2019 called “Who Cut The Cheese?”.
I have been teaching private lessons on drums, guitar, and bass for a total of 8 years. I started teaching drum lessons when I use to visit back home for the summer during my college years. When I graduated, I started working at a School of Rock in Westchester County, NY. Teaching drums, bass, guitar, and beginner piano. In addition, I also coached and ensemble directed three of the performance groups at the school of rock as well. I currently am teaching at School of Rock in Philadelphia as well as teaching guitar lessons to students at Bancroft School in Marlton, NJ. (School for students with disabilities)
For beginners, I usually start with teaching you basic technique on the instrument. For example, how to hold the instrument, notes on the fretboard, how to count and play at the same time, etc. Once the student progresses, I begin to teach you more intermediate techniques, music theory, ear training, and learning songs. For advanced students, I try and give more in-depth material to be able to play the music that you love to play. For example, for drummers that entail 4-way coordination exercises, linear patterns, etc. Guitar: learning how to solo using different concepts/scales, learning how to voice chords differently.
I think it is important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. Everyone learns differently and everyone has different interests and goals. My goal as a teacher is to try and cater to the student's interests. My mission is to give you the tools and knowledge to be able to play the music want to learn and be able to give the instruction to be able to be creative on your instrument. I always express to students (especially younger students) to play along with records and recordings and find your way around the instrument. That's how I discovered my passion for music.
