ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA, Connecticut College, Cello Performance

Overview:
I'm a dedicated cellist and guitarist who really enjoys working with people of all ages and ability levels. I graduated with a BA in cello performance from Connecticut College and went on to study at Virginia Tech. I have played in amateur orchestras as well as in chamber ensembles. I also have performance experience on guitar in a variety of settings. I am a huge fan of live music and believe that the two best ways to carry on the tradition of music is through performance as well as one on one and classroom teaching. I also have performed electric guitar.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience includes teaching both cello and guitar privately as well as cello in various classroom situations. I like to give students a combination of repertoire that I think will build their playing ability directly as well as repertoire that they are personally passionate about. I have experience teaching both classical music and rock music as well as blues. I enjoy teaching students of all ages. I have taught people of all ages and various ability levels. Regardless of their level, I have managed to help them all improve. I am very patient and can find creative ways of bringing the best out of students.
METHODS USED
When teaching children, I typically start out with Suzuki cello repertoire. I am also very serious about teaching physical concepts so that the student is able to express themselves through the instrument I believe that there are certain technical principles that must be communicated and I do my absolute best to make sure that the student understands them. As students become more advanced I then introduce repertoire that suits them and that I believe they will enjoy. When teaching guitar I will typically start off with songs that the student can recognize. I also believe that training the ear is very important.
LESSON STYLE
As a teacher, I like to instill as much passion for music as I possible can. I enjoy seeing students develop their love of music as well as their ability to play their specific instrument. Therefore I like to make lessons as fun as possible but also grounded in a seriousness about music and a respect for the process of music making. I think that students advance fastest when they gain a curiosity for their instrument as well as the music that that play on it. Therefore, I try to route my teaching in a combination of encouragement and knowledge.

I've only had a few lessons with John. I find him to be professional and helpful. If I ever have a question John said to feel free and phone him. I'm becoming more comfortable with him and I think my guitar playing has improved. So far, so good.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
