Overview:
A cheap guitar given to me by my parents for Christmas started this life in a direction that has formed me and sustained me for over twenty years. My love for the music is deep and true and it is, to me, still the greatest joy on the planet. Time stands still for me every time that I pick it up and play. I have become the music monk meditating on scales and chord substitutions, finding my balance with light strings and heavy rhythms. I write songs, teach guitar and voice and entertain folks. I am available for lessons locally and online. It gives me great joy to I know that even if a student doesn't make music a career that each student will be enriched from it! I have been performing and composing decades with folk groups, blues bands, rock bands and jazz bands and love to sharing my experience and knowledge others.

EXPERIENCE

I began teaching music in 2009 as a tutor for the local junior college teaching music theory and musicianship. I expanded to voice and guitar lessons and have been teaching for the last 12 years. I teach in my home studio, in my students homes and online. I know that consistent practice is the way for students to reach their music goals and so I make sure that each student knows what to practice and how to practice. I am always trying to instill enjoyment in each lesson and I positively encourage and edify each accomplishment. I'm always looking to bring on new students of all ages!

METHODS USED
All of my lessons are built around songs to teach technique and I add materials to teach theory and musicianship if the student wants and needs it. I always interview each student to find out their interests and desires and and build a custom curriculum eight lessons at a time to insure satisfaction and success on the students terms. I have student assessments at the end of each eight lessons block to make sure that the student knows how they have improved and where they need more work. I encourage recitals but only as the student and I both feel ready for those who want to perform.

LESSON STYLE

I believe in encouragement, fun and positive focus on the students progress at whatever speed that they progress. This makes each student look forward to each lesson with eagerness and actually accelerates their progress. I never push a student and instead encourage and edify the student and try to use their own favorite pieces of music to keep them excited about their next lesson. Acknowledging small progress is the key and I never let a student leave without celebrating their accomplishments no matter how small!

John is an outstanding guitar teacher – My lesson with John was like drinking out of a firehose. John knows everything there is to know about all aspects of your music journey – the music theory underlying the songs you study, the melodic and compositional techniques used in the song’s melody as well as your improvisations, the guitar mechanics and fingering technique required to play in any setting, and the harmonic structures you need to play any song on the guitar. John is a clear communicator and a great listener as a teacher – he will focus closely on your goals and provide you with the methods you need to achieve them. Thank you John!

John is an excellent singing coach. He asked me what I wanted to get out of the lessons and he actually listened! Tayloring the lessons for my specific end goal. And the plan was well thought out and fun! He has a broad depth of knowledge that is not only helpful but very interesting. He's obviously been doing this for a long time. He gave me confidence to enjoy singing for myself and in front of others. Thanks John!

I met John through my spiritual center. He was one of the musicians who performed there. This was probably 20 years ago. I have always loved his artistry in playing the guitar. I bought a guitar and started taking lessons with John and we'd get together every week for practice. It was a joy to learn from John and thinking back I really miss it. I would definitely recommend John. He's easy going and has a great sense of humor and you'll want to go back for more lessons. I do.
