B.S. Music Education , Western Carolina University
Awards:
Outstanding Senior Bandmember , Western Carolina University
Overview:
After college I played professionally in Nashville. Later I spent 3 years traveling full-time through out the United States playing trumpet in several different music groups. Following that I moved back to Nashville and played as a free-lance musician, including as a recording studio musician and contractor. Afterwards, I became a staff musician for Liberty Broadcasting Network. A large Christian Television Network. After 5 years I started my own concert ministry. I traveled again, this time on mostly weekends for the next ten years. The next career move came when I became a full- time orchestra director at a mega church in Birmingham,AL. Since then I have continued to play in VA, Atlanta and Orlando.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught privately off and on through-out the years in several cities that I've lived in. I like to challenge students but not expect more than they are able to deliver. I like to concentrate and focus on the basics of playing while expanding on the students ability. I believe strongly in a good daily warm-up and daily routine. I believe that with 30-45 minutes of daily practice time, any student can see noticeable, continual improvement. I believe the more you improve, the more fun playing becomes.
METHODS USED
My methods are based on what I have personally tried and proven to be beneficial. The three main methods I find to be extremely important are the Arban book, and the Clarke technical and characteristic studies. In addition, I've found equally important the Earl Irons long tone and flexibility exercises. I like to find out what the student is most interested in a tailor the practice regiment accordingly. Once we start to master the basics, we can move on to specific musical styles that the student wishes to pursue.
LESSON STYLE
I like to approach teaching in a relaxed style. I find students do better when they are relaxed and comfortable. I love to see my students gain excitement to their playing as they see themselves progressing. I plan my assignments based on the students desire to improve. The more they improve the more their desire for playing is fueled. In addition, I want to expose the student to many different approaches to playing and have them choose the style that will best suit them. Also to many different styles of music.
