BM, College of Mount Saint Joseph, Classical Guitar Performance and Music Education
I began taking lessons on the guitar at age 8 and continues with a few different instructors all throughout my life, and still do. I started studying Classical Guitar my Sophomore year of High School. I started teaching the guitar in 1990 at age 18 in a local music store. I was able to perform and teach while earning an Associates in Liberal Arts at The University of Cincinnati, where my intention was to enter their Jazz guitar program as I had begun studying it at their prep department. I decided upon Graduation to study Classical Guitar At Mount Saint Joseph where I earned my BM. I have continued to teach non stop since the age of 18 and truly enjoy it.
I began teaching for Pendragon's Music in 1990, and since had taught for 22 years at a couple of the local music stores. In 2010 I started to gradually open up days at my home studio where I had a much more spacious, clean, noise free environment to teach in with better equipment. In 2012 I left the music stores all together and went full time at my home and at J5 Sound Studios in Bridgetown. Upon J5 Studios unfortunate closing due to the popularity of DIY home recording I was able to procure a nice, spacious studio in Dent 5753 Harrison Ave Cincinnati OH 45248. I like to cater the lesson to the individuals age, experience, goals, and musical tastes.
I implement materials of my own design mixed with songs of the students choosong and tastes, and typically have them up and playing a song or two that they like in a couple of lessons. All ages, styles, and expereince levels are welcome. For reading, I like to use a combination of notation, tabs and chord diagrams. And while I dont absolutely insist that the student learn to read notation, I do strongly encourage it. The ability to read notation, even if its just open position in the key of C major will help anyone, especially young students play better. I want a student to be able to grab a piece of music off the shelf and be able to read it well, rgardless of what formant it is written in.
I love teaching! I've done it for over 25 years now and between it and performing I support myself and my family. I truly enjoy sharing with others the joy of music. Wether its an audition for a conservatory, or to become a star, or play some gigs at the local coffee shop, or simply to be able to strum a couple of your favorite songs by the camp fire, I can help. I like to keep the lessons upbeat, educational, yet enjoyable at the same time. I like to have the student have a hand in picking the material we play. This way, they are more enclined to practice longer, more often, and enjoy their experience staying with it longer.
