NYU (Washington Square College): dropped out 16 credits short of a BA to travel and deejay on Radio London in the UK
I've fronted bands and sang solo with guitar in many venues, sang on KUNM live 4 times, studied voice in NYC with Carrie Richter, was a radio announcer/DJ ( WNYU, Radio London, Arizona's KSUN). I'm a musicologist, articles on rock & roll published in Crawdaddy Magazine, a monograph on the natural history of R & B completed and a book on the best pop tunes of the last century in the works. If you have a passion for singing, Ill try to inspire and guide you to dig deep into the world of song, to do your best and be your best doing what you love.
From way back in high school when I was the lead singer in a vocal group, I've always been singing, and I can say that singing is beautiful when emitted easily and well, fine as wine most anytime: celebrating births or mourning death, mating or contemplating, closing ranks or giving thanks, praising gods or turning clods of sod, selling soap or trying to cope, making magic moments day or night -- be it a keening wail, a chant or croon, a cheery singalong or a lone moan in the darkest hour before dawn. And if they pay you for the lyrical life signs, that's nice work if you can get it, but if you sing just for the money the spirit leaves your song and that's a natural fact. Long may the true singer's song stir souls and roundly resonate in this often worrisome world!
I don't believe in wasting too much of a student's time running scales. I'll test your ear and your sense of pitch with a few scales initially, and then move on to the study of singing styles, the key aspects or projection, dynamics, phrasing, and how to blend your influences into your own style, while offering some tips on breathing well and staying fit: a great singer, much like an athlete, must stay in training, and always have ears to hear more and learn more. If you love doing this, its is more play than work, but it is work and you have to love doing it to "keep on keeping on."
When a good teacher finds a good student, they inspire each other. If you want to learn how to sing in the shower a little better, that's fine, and I might help you do that; but if you feel impelled to use your voice to issue forth song in a more profound way, you have to begin with a deep-down feeling, and one that you can project from your body (and soul) up through your throat and out of your mouth. There are some "tricks" you can use, but it's ultimately not about "tricks" but about turning feelings into sounds and delivering the goods pitch-perfect and in time. Melody, rhythm, harmony. I can help, but really it's all about what YOU can and will do.
