Overview:
Hello! My name is Jonathan and I am very passionate about teaching music to all people from all ages and backgrounds. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Southwestern Adventist University. In addition to this have performed in several countries such as South Korea, Germany, Italy, France, Czech Republic and many more as both an ensemble member as well as featured soloist. In addition to this, I have also performed at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Hall. In addition to studying Opera, I have also studied Musical Theatre at the American Musical & Dramatic Academy in Manhattan, New York. While in New York, I have had the privilege to train under and work with some of Broadway's most legendary singers and actors.
EXPERIENCE
My experience with teaching started when I was completing my Bachelors degree. I taught both privately from my own home studio as well as a contracted teaching artist at several music schools. For me, teaching has always been one of my biggest passions. I enjoy creating an environment where students can not only grow and develop their skills but also explore the different nuances in music. One thing that is very important to me as a teacher is encouraging students to be consistent in their practice time. My job as a teacher is to inspire them every lesson so that when they are on their own in between lessons, they feel great about their accomplishments that they are making on their own.
METHODS USED
For beginner students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the students starts to understand the fundamentals, I begin to incorporate elements of beginner music theory. I do this because it allows the student to take to fundamentals and gives them the tools to get creative with the knowledge that they already have. Once we have this, I begin to incorporate solo repertoire while we refine our music theory skills. The solo repertoire is to prepare the students for their recitals. For adults and non-beginners, I start with asking them what specific genres and styles they want to cover. This typically ranges from classical to pop and everything in between. I then tailor each lesson specifically for them.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style encourages the student to have fun, be expressive, and get curious about music. I keep things very simple in my lessons. Each student I have ever taught progresses at their own pace. So for me as the teacher I work in the lesson to give them the tools they need to work. It is very. important in lessons to acknowledge the student's accomplishments so that they are aware of where they are growing. It is just as important to explore areas where the student may be having a more difficult time grasping. I believe that their concept that cant be understood, simply just a way that it has not yet been taught.
