BA, SUNY Buffalo, Psychology -Minor in Vocal Performance
I am a young, passionate vocal instructor that enjoys helping others on the journey of finding their own voice. I graduated with my Bachelor's in Psychology with a minor in Vocal Performance last year and have an extensive performance history. On my own path of learning how to sing, I had a long and laborious journey of self-discovery. This lead to a passion for singing in every style and perfecting every style while maintaining a full harmonic spectrum and not sacrificing in range. Due to my own 'vocal OCD', I am always pushing myself to sing higher and with more agility which allows me to also experience vocal sensations and problems that I can help my own students with.
My teaching experience has all been one-on-one coachings in different styles such as Musical Theater, opera, oratorio and pop styles. I can really hear the potential in each voice and have been through every stage that a singer can possibly imagine. I started off as someone who had absolutely no sense of pitch with less than an octave of usable range and over the past three years have now gotten to the point of riffing, chest-mixing in the fifth octave, whistle tones... etc. If there is a vocalization that you want to learn, I can guarantee that I will be able to help your voice get it perfect.
For beginning singers, I truly work on getting the support system working as early as possible. Because of the delicacy of the youngest voices, I believe this is the most fundamental aspect of singing. Range can be developed as the vocal mechanism develops, but this will all be made easier with a solid support structure. For intermediate singers, I work on freeing the voice and allowing the natural vibrato (or 'spin') to come through. I acheive this through various agility exercises and working on repertoire with at least an octave of range. I also work on bridging the vocal registers through mindful vowel manipulation and plenty, PLENTY of support. For the advanced singer, the instruction can be guided on helping through a piece of repertoire, particular vocalizations or ornaments and the like. Depending on the actual skill level, we will work on projection and range. Also, dependant on goals and preferances, working on different styles of singing using the same support and vocal manipulation, but different tone! As a note, my personal belief is that the head voice is the KEY to singing with any sort of power and range. Strengthening this area of the voice is of particular importance for both men and women and I work extensively on this mechanism.
I have a lot of passion for voice and I want my students to progress. In my own journey, it's taken years of daily practice to see real results and change. I push my students to practice daily for at least an hour and I give specific vocalizations that will help strengthen particular weaknesses in each voice. You will see results and I am one to always acknowledge progress! We will pick out appropriate repertoire that is both fun to sing and inspires passion for you to actually want to sing and practice. By trying out what you are inspired by, I can successfully tailor my instruction to your needs!
