When I first subbed in as a teacher, I knew teaching music was for me. I am a multi-instrumentalist,performer,songwriter,producer,as well as being an instructor of music. I started playing music when I was in grade school and have continued as I am pursuing my degree in Music Education/Jazz Performance at William Paterson University. I have done numerous gigs for various events-Jazz Big Bands,Rock Groups,Trios,Solo Guitar,etc-From cruise ships to weddings and corporate events. I have a passion to teach, and I believe everyone has the ability to learn music if taught properly.
I started teaching when i started college. I was first a substitute teacher. From then, I slowly built up my student database. I have worked for many music schools and have always had a packed schedule. I make sure the student feels at home and comfortable when taking lessons. I believe music education is important these days. Many schools are taking away their music programs. When teaching, I am confident in my skills for keeping the student interested, learning, and happy. I love doing my job as an instructor, I hope to pick up students through Musika. I teach all ages of music with various styles of music.
For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. I also work with music theory. It is also important to know what you are doing, not just putting your fingers on the strings. You'll learn what makes up a chord, why a scale sounds the way it does, etc. I also use technology for my lessons. With a laptop, watching other musicians is important, I can slow down music, and we can look up songs to work on. My guitar method is similar to my other methods for other instruments.
I am a laid back teacher, but I make sure all students behave and learn. I love when the students enjoy what they are doing, and when I enjoy what I am doing. It's a relationship that you build. I expect the students to practice their craft. I continue to learn as I teach as well. Inspiration is very important. The inspired students are special for they know what they want to accomplish. I help provide that inspiration as well. Week by week, we will work on getting reading and theory together, as well as learning the proper technique and songs. I am happy to teach music and I have had results of success.
