I am a professional trumpet player in the New York area. I am a versatile and adaptable player equally comfortable playing small group jazz, lead trumpet, salsa, funk, classical and theater. I am originally from Vancouver Island, Canada and have also lived in Toronto. I moved to New York in 2012 to attend the Juilliard School. I enjoy having a lot of diversity in my schedule, and I am often juggling many different projects. I lead my own quartet as well as the genre-defying Heavyweights Brass Band. Artists and groups I have performed with include Dave Douglas, Seamus Blake, Paquito D'Rivera, Giovanni Hidalgo, Nikki Yanofsky, Kermit Ruffins, and the Toronto production of Jersey Boys. These days I play regularly at New York venues such as Dizzy's Club, Birdland, Smalls, Smoke and the Jazz Gallery.
I have been teaching trumpet, improvisation and theory for ten years and have worked with students from beginner to professional level. I have taught private students, clinics, summer workshops and full band classes. I have worked with the Juilliard Outreach Program, Yamaha Canada, the Sterling Hall School and Roy Thompson Hall's 'Save the Music' program. I have also given university level workshops at schools such as Humber College, Vancouver Island University, Snow College, and the University of Toronto.
I strive to give my students all the tools they need to become complete musicians who can play, listen and connect with music on an active level. I work with my students to develop a strong technical foundation on their instrument, from which we can explore harmony, rhythmic training, ear training and theory. Beginner students will eventually be able to read and interpret sheet music, improvise, learn songs by ear, and compose music. Advanced students will gain the skills to become not just a great brass player, but a great artist.
I like to tailor my approach to each student and the things they find inspiring about brass instruments. I will set goals and motivate my students in a way that works for their learning style. Lessons will always be engaging, challenging and fun. All students will begin with a foundation in the essential trumpet method books including the Arban, Clarke, Schlossberg and Chichowicz. From there we can explore specific areas of interest, with my specialties being upper register development, improvisation, jazz theory, transcription and solo pieces/concertos.
