I'm just a regular start that drives to inspire and help students that share my level of passion for music. I recently graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in 2019, with a degree in Commercial Music Technology with a concentration in Guitar. During my time here as well I performed with the on campus Marching Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Ensemble, preforming as a trumpeter in all three and with guitar in the latter. My professional goal in the years to come is to become certified to become a band director, and giving lessons on the side I believe is a good place to start!
As stated previously, my end goal is to become a certified band director and am looking to get more experience with teaching. While in high school I helped fellow musicians in a sort of section leader role, as well as the "TA" for our stage crew class. In college I was in leadership in both the University Band Program and in my band fraternity, instructing both sides in how to preform music and how to become a great character at the same time! A strong drive to improve can come from competition, playing with friends, and above all else, practicing! I believe that competition is a strong drive to push students forward in whatever they are passionate about, and preforming with others is a great way to improve as well. I incorporate many of the practices that I learned from my instructors in college in my teachings, while some are easy to pick at others are more advanced, allowing myself as a teacher to push my students further early on and giving them a advantage for later on!
My main repertoire for teaching comes from William's Levitt's "A Modern Method for Guitar". It comes with Three Volumes, and from beginner to intermediate anywhere in the book is a great place to start! From basic music reading to learning different positions, I believe that these books provide a cornerstone for even the more advanced players to refresh on in the beginning! I also strongly encourage students to bring in whatever songs or pieces they are passionate about and allow myself to build a curriculum based on their tastes and musical preferences.
Seeing a student progress and dive into their own passions in their music career is one of the most important things of this art. I strongly believe that each student should progress in their own time frame based on their own determination, with a strong emphasis on a regular practice schedule. Also by encouraging the student's tastes rather than attempting to drill the tastes of my own into them, it can become a very awarding process! By determining where they want to go in their musical journey and what steps they are willing to take to get there, I can implement a style of teaching that not only pushes themselves as musicians and students, but opens doors for them in the music world.
