I love music and I love teaching. I have been playing the trombone for over 10 years and been involved in music since a very young age. My love of music has given me the opportunity to perform in some of Utah's best music halls, such as Abravanel Hall and The Conference Center on Temple Square, with some of Utah's best performing groups, such as the Utah Symphony and Caleb Chapman's Soundhouse. I also had the opportunity to record several songs as a member of the Hooligans Brass Band. I have experience as a concert, jazz, and marching trombonist.
My experience as a formal teacher began just over a year ago, when I took on a beginning student who had never played the instrument before. I have also been a tutor and mentor to my peers since my high school days when I was a section leader in our symphonic and jazz bands. and captain of the marching band. I have worked with students who aren't part of any band or orchestra and just want to learn the instrument, as well as students who are members of an ensemble and want to speed up their growth.
For beginning students who are members of performing ensembles, I will use the instruction book that their group is working out of. I focus on building good fundamentals and technique. I always set aside time in my lessons so I can help my students with the music that they are currently playing in my ensemble. I will also help my students select a challenging solo piece that they can perform at solo & ensemble events. For students who aren't members of an ensemble, I start with Essential Elements for beginners. Once they have a good grasp of the instrument, I will help them select fun and challenging pieces to learn to keep them engaged and progressing. For more experienced students, I act as a tutor, helping them polish their technique and tone quality while also introducing them to more advanced techniques as they become ready for them.
I understand that we all think of music in different ways and that we all learn in different ways. This means that I tailor my lessons to the style and speed of my students because I want them to develop the same love for music that I have. I will help them set goals and find pieces that are not only challenging, but enjoyable. I love it when my students master a piece that used to be very challenging for them so I will always encourage them and acknowledge their progress. My goal as a teacher is for my students to reach their goals.
