I love music and I love teaching! I graduated in 2014 with my Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Utah State University and, in 2018, my Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Kansas. I had the opportunity to be a part of the Chamber Singers at both schools where I was able to perform across Utah as well as Dallas, Kansas City, China and Costa Rica. I’ve been part of ensembles on two professional recordings and remain an active performer and director of local groups in Salt Lake County.
My main background has been in the classroom. I have six years of experience teaching choir in secondary schools in Utah and two additional years at the collegiate level so I’ve been able to work with singers from 11 to 20+ years old. Whether your voice is just beginning to change or is maturing, I’ve been there and know how to help! I’ve been playing the piano for over 20 years and love helping students develop a new talent and love for music. Regardless the instrument, I strive to make my lessons fun and personalized since there’s not one size that fits all in music.
For most students on piano, I typically use the Faber series to learn technique and theory simultaneously. It’s important to be able to gain that knowledge of theory early to help students be more independent. For adults on piano, we would work together to find repertoire to fit their skill level and interest to keep things engaging and relevant. Voice is much more individualized since every instrument is unique. Pieces are chosen to match a student’s preferred styles while developing some classical foundation skills to create a healthy sound.
I, above all, want students to develop their own love and appreciation for music. I have high expectations in y studio, but I make it clear that students will progress at different speeds and that’s okay. Every week I give a set of warm-ups and exercises to focus on and expect students to practice so we can hone them when we’re together, but I’ll never ask a student to do something they’re not comfortable or familiar with - if ever there’s a question I’m there to answer or demonstrate. My studio is a judgment free zone and I meet students where they are.
