I am a passionate guitar and bass player who loves to teach music to people of various backgrounds and age groups. It is a gratifying experience of mine to guide others through their own musical journey and watch them grow as musicians. In 2010 I finished studying in the minor program for performing arts in music at CSU Channel Islands where I took one on one lessons from a great guitar player and music professor, Dr. Paul Murphy, as well as other courses in music theory and live performance. I have been in various music projects that mostly focused on hard rock and heavy metal music which date back to before I even took music lessons in college. I have played lead electric guitar, bass guitar, and lead vocals in the bands that I have been in. I have performed in numerous live shows both in Northern California and in Ventura County and even got to the finals of a battle of the bands contest in San Francisco.
Starting in 2012 when I lived in Sonoma County in Northern California I started my own business of giving private music lessons from beginner to advanced at peoples homes. Through this I gained meaningful experience on how to communicate with students and forming long lasting bonds that guided them through a meaningful musical journey. In 2014 I was hired by a local private music school called Art and Soul Music Studios where I continued my same methods of teaching. As part of Art and Soul I prepared students for public music recitals where they performed in front of their peers and parents. Throughout my music teaching career I have witnessed students of mine go from not knowing how to grip a guitar to being able to do an improvised jam with a band. Now that I have relocated back to where I grew up in Ventura County and I am searching for more students to continue my music teaching adventures.
For every student I try to evaluate what they already know about music or at least what their musical interests are. For beginners I usually start them out with the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book series to guide them through the fundamentals of a guitar and music theory. For those that already have some playing experience I focus on the areas that they are weak on and break it down for them so that they can see it in the most simplest step by step approach. Though for each student I will always have at least one song that they are interested in for us to jam together and improve on.
For me it is really important to establish a personal relationship with the student and always evaluate how they feel about their progress on a weekly basis. I always emphasis that a student know what style or genre of music they are interested in because they are more likely to stick to something that they have a natural passion for. Every lesson officially starts with a scale warm up to get the blood flowing to the players fingers and from there we go to either some sight reading pieces from the Hal Leonard books, chord changing or soloing exercises, and then lastly go to practicing a specific song of either mine or the student’s choosing. However, I always stress to students that their improvement is always going to depend on how much they are consistently practicing.
