My name is Jose and I'm an L.A. native. I've been singing for over twenty years in a variety of styles including classical, jazz, musical theater, pop/rock, R&B, and World Music. I have a very patient and approachable teaching style and my lessons are catered to each student's needs. In my opinion, there are no dumb questions or answers but those that were never uttered. I work with both children and adults and with people from all different backgrounds. Music is a beautiful gift to humanity, but like any gift, we have to open it and open up to it in order to see its benefits work wonders in our lives.
My musical teaching experience can be traced back to my early years in college where I started my own music studio based out of a church. From there, I moved on to a professional school where I was able to work with mainly children and teenagers. As I gained more teaching and academic experience, I began to branch out and build my own private studio out of my home. Aside from teaching music, I am also an Elementary school computer and technology teacher. This line of work allows me to reinforce my teaching skills as I have to be able to teach and explain to my students very dense and complex terms. Music is very similar to computers in that they both must be learned in small increments or steps in order to see the bigger picture. During my graduate studies, I had the opportunity to teach young adults and adults alike. This experience allowed me to widen and increase the breadth of my studio and reach out to all age groups. Music is ageless and as such it can be learned by any person of any age, young or old.
The voice is a very personal instrument to learn how to use in a musical sense because it forms a large part of our identity. Everybody has a unique voice and requires a unique treatment in order to fine tune it and use it to sing beautifully. When it comes to songs, I like to work with three songs at a time: a classical song in Italian, a musical theater/show tune piece, and a song chosen by the student. I like for my students to choose a song of their liking because the point of singing is to sing songs that bring us pleasure and make us feel good. A typical lesson begins with warm-ups; which helps to run inventory on the voice to see if it’s healthy and using proper technique. After warm-ups, we dive into the repertoire or songs we are working on. We’ll start by going over the words of the song, how to pronounce them, their emotional meaning, and your opinion on them. Then we’ll sing through a given song and use different vocal and physical techniques to loosen up your voice and body so that you can sing freely and fully. All lessons will be recorded so that you may review and practice with them at a later time. We’ll break a few minutes before our allotted time to discuss any concerns or questions.
During my lessons, I like to create an environment free of judgment, embarrassment, inhibition, self-doubt, and any other emotion or thought, internal or external that is going to deter my students from becoming the best singers possible. I’m always open to try different techniques and approaches in order to allow my students to open to me and to the music. Singing is one of the most therapeutic practices anyone can experience because the music is literally running in and out of your body. Not only are you omitting sound waves from your mouth, you’re also emitting emotion and passion embedded in the music and in your very being. You might never become the world’s best or most accomplished singer, but if you allow me to work with you and you allow yourself to work with me, I guarantee you’ll be the most fulfilled and happiest singer on the face of this Earth.
