WKU Performer of the Semester Fall 2016
Ohio University Clarinet Gala soloist Spring 2019
Hello! I just graduated from my masters degree from Ohio University in Clarinet Performance and earned my bachelor from Western Kentucky University in Music/Spanish. I started teaching band camp after my first year of college have not stopped, soon after that I started giving private lessons to clarinetist in the western Ky area and I realize that I loved it. Between WKU and Ohio University I have being a member and have played principal in many of these groups: Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Marching Band and Pep Band, Clarinet Choir and Chamber Music and Opera. My favorite experiences have been playing The Magic Flute opera by Mozart, Soloist in Clarinet Gala performing Concerto for Clarinet by Artie Shaw and a Broadway style musical in which I doubled between clarinet and bass clarinet. My passion for teaching partially comes from not having a private lessons teacher and wanting one while growing up. My first private lesson was when I started my bachelors degree at 18.
I started teaching in band camp the summer after my first year of college and have continuously worked with several schools in KY. I have given lessons to students who are just starting out and high school students preparing for auditions and/other performances. I highly encourage students to start taking lessons as early as possible to establish good habits and break bad ones. My goal for any of my students is always to learn as much as possible and to do their best. I teach knowing that many of my students will choose different paths in their careers and might never touch clarinet again but I want to make sure they get the best experience possible at least while they play.
I am a big fan of the Rubank elementary, intermediate, and advance methods. In addition I like incorporate sight reading into lessons due to being a common element in auditions. For high school students the I use Rubank books and supplement that with Rose etudes as they are often use as audition material in KY. One of the first things I do in lessons is to listen to professional clarinet recordings. In my past experience teaching I find that there are many students who do not listen no enough professional musicians in this case clarinet and my goal as a teacher is to expose them so they can better themselves.
I will ask the student for their goals and what they wish to accomplish by taking lessons. Once we establish a goal we can work on attaining that goal. During lessons I find it useful for students to learn some basic music theory as it helps understanding patterns that can be applied to the clarinet. I strongly focus on fundamentals especially when teaching younger players. My style of teaching is to prepare students for auditions and solo and ensemble festival. I want to the student to grow as much as possible and find that friendly competition and reasons to perform push the student become a stronger musician.
