I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1962 and I have been passionate about music, especially drumming since I was a toddler. My mother used to take me along to her aerobics classes and at that time a drummer would play a drum to keep a beat for the class instead of having recorded music playing through the speakers. I was absolutely fascinated by his drum beats and I was always trying to play along with the drummer during the class. It was not until I was 13 years old that I had my first drumset but during all those years until then I collected and constantly played many brazilian percussion instruments, which acctually gave me a very stong foundation in drumming and also in the Brazilian popular rhythms. Very soon after, I started my professional drumming career playing for musical theater productions which led me to many other projects and soon I was showcasing as a drummer in National tours, Radio and TV programs in Brazil. I attended renowned music schools in Brazil to improve my skills in drumming, music theory and musicianship. I started giving private drums instructions when I was 20 years old, few years before I decided to come to California in 1989 to attend the Musicians Institute where I graduated with Honnors mention in the Certificate. Parallel from being an active performer in Los Angeles, California I got involved with the teaching aspect of drumming since 1997 which for me is an extremelly rewarding activity, where I can pass on everything I've learned trhough the years about music, drumming and enriching relationships.
My teaching experience goes back to 1986 when I was still living in Brazil, I was teaching private drum classes for a limited number of students because of my tight schedule as a performer. It was in Los Angeles, California in 1995 that I started being much more focused and excited about teaching music and drums, when I was given the opportunity to join the LAUSD system as a Music/Drum instructor. Since then I have been participating in many music education programs in Elementary, Midlle, and High Schools as wel as Continuation Schools both for LAUSD and as a staff member of CALARTS University. Since aquiring my own music studio in Porter Ranch, California in 2005 I was able to consistently offer private drum classes at my location where I feel I can provide the right equipment and right atmosphere to my students to be able to enjoy and benefit as much as possible from our teaching session. Also I have students who prefer to use their own equipment and setting for the classes. In those cases I'll do a In-Home class, I'll go to their homes or studios.
For the begginer I like to start by exploring and accessing their ability to do anything musical in the drumset while showing them some very basic and familiar drum beats. Shortly after I introduce them to the foundations and building blocks of drum playing through visual, auditive cues as well as introducing music theory knowledge. Music reading is one of the most important skill to learn as you progress. Drum Books will be used for the classes For intermediate and Advance , I also make an accessment to find out where they are in terms of drum technique, drum culture, all the music styles that they are familiar as well as unfamiliar with. After first meeting Im able to create a program which we will use as our guideline trhoughout the classes.
I have been playing and teaching drums for many years, and as a drum teacher I strive to quickly identify aspirations and potentials of my students so I can be supportive and a positive influence on their endeavors, also keeping their motivation high so they can always expand and improve their skills in what they love to do, which is playing the drums!!So, each student have his own customized drum class!
